The Class LL state championship game seemed destined for overtime. Newtown High School’s football team had the ball at the Darien 36 yard line with three seconds left and the game even at 7-7. Then one of the more dramatic finishes in Connecticut championship history occurred.

Newtown's Catie Gregory scored twice, including the game winner in overtime, as the Masuk High School-led co-op girls' hockey team defeated the Notre Dame-Fairfield co-op 4-3 in overtime at The Rinks at Shelton on December 13.

The defending South-West Conference champion Newtown High School’s girls’ basketball team may be starting fresh with a new season and some different players in starting roles, but it is a familiar scene overall on the Nighthawks’ hardwood.

Newtown players will help the Masuk of Monroe-led cooperative girls’ hockey team compete again this winter. Catie Gregory, a senior captain who plays forward and defense, senior forward Bridget Nicholson, junior forward Annie Fowler, and freshman forward Mia Paltauf all represent Newtown.

The rain could have neutralized top-seeded Newtown High School’s potent passing game or caused turnovers. It didn’t. And although visiting and fourth-seeded Simsbury hung in there for most of the December 9 Class LL state football playoff semifinal matchup, the Trojans couldn’t stop the Nighthawks either. Newtown prevailed 17-0, earning a spot in the championship game.
