On Veterans Day, November 11, Devon Pope of Boy Scout Troop 770 led an official flag retirement ceremony for VFW Post 308 at Cullens Youth Association, for his Eagle project.

Devon and his fellow Boy Scouts educated the large crowd that gathered about the history of the American flag and what constitutes a flag being retired.

During the ceremony, the color guard raised the flag for one last time as members of the military and Boy Scouts saluted and said the Pledge of Allegiance. The flag was then lowered, cut into four pieces, and respectfully burned till completely ash.

Devon explain, "This flag is representative of the 2,000 flags that the VFW have collected over the past two years. They cannot be burned here today, due to them being made of synthetic materials, which release harmful gases into the air when burned. When we retire this flag here, we are retiring the 2,000 other flags that await their safe disposal."

The remaining flags will be brought to Wheelabrator in Bridgeport, who have volunteered to donate their services to convert the flag remains into clean energy.

In addition to conducting the flag retirement ceremony, Devon is also working on creating a new flag donation box for the VFW, which he anticipates will be completed in the following week.
