Senior services for Newtown seniors are available at the Multi-Purpose Building on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. The Senior Center is under the auspices of The Commission on Aging. The center is run by Senior Services Director Marilyn Place. For more information about programs offered at the Senior Center call 270-4310.

You may drop in at the Senior Center on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook weekdays between 9 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door minibus service Monday through Friday. Buses also run all day from the Senior Center to Sand Hill Plaza. On Fridays, the bus alternates between rides to Danbury Fair Mall and Berkshire Plaza in Danbury (to Wal-Mart Route 6). Cost is 65¢ each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip, 75¢ each way for out of town. Call 748-2511 TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE to book a ride and get the out-of-town Friday schedule.

 

This Week’s Programs

*Appointments can be made to review and/or sign up for PART D DRUG PLANS on Mondays between 10 am and noon. Call for an appointment, 270-4310.

*Come make Valentine cards for the troops every Tuesday from 10 am to noon.

*Beginning on Thursday, January 8, at 1 pm, come play scrabble. Call the center at 270-431 if you would like to participate.

Upcoming Programs

*BINGO will be January 21 and 28 at 1 pm.

*COMMISSION ON AGING will be on Monday, January 26, at 5 pm.

*BEGINNER BALLROOM DANCING CLASS will be offered. Call the center if you are interested. Classes would start soon if there is interest.

Day Trips

*A DAY AT THE RACES, see live harness racing at Monticello, N.Y., on Wednesday, February 11, with hot and cold luncheon buffet, clubhouse admission, and 1,800 video gaming machines. Depart at 8 am; cost is $43.

*ACE IN THE HOLE presents the show, “Carnival in Venice” an Italian-style Mardi Gras, at The Brownstone in Paterson, N.J., on Tuesday, February 24, featuring Italian American tenor DaVido and also Italian-style street performers, and the I Ragazzi Band will provide daylong listening and dancing pleasure. Cost is $86.

Overnight Trips

*Enjoy an overnight at MOHEGAN SUN GETAWAY from January 27 to 28. Prices include hotel accommodations, $10 food coupon or one buffet, and $30 fee bet. Cost is $169 single; $109 double; $104 triple; depart at 8 am. Sign up today.

*YOGA classes are Monday and Thursday at 10:30 am.

*Billiards room; poker/card room; ping pong; and Wii bowling, golf, tennis, and baseball.

*Wii BOWLING, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday afternoons.

*CARDS FOR OUR TROOPS every Tuesday morning from 10 am to noon and 1 to 3 pm.

*BEGINNERS BRIDGE LESSONS on Wednesday, 9:30 am, with Mary Matern.

*BOARD GAME DAY is every Thursday at 1 pm. Coffee or tea and snack will be supplied.

*MOVIE DAY on Tuesdays and Fridays at 2 pm. Enjoy a good “favorite” movie with a friend.

Menu For Week Of

January 5–9

Monday: Stuffed pepper, mashed potato, Tuscan blend vegetables, seedless rye bread, mixed fruit juice, coconut custard pie.

Tuesday: Baked ham with pineapple glaze, sweet potato pone, green beans, dinner roll, seasonal fresh fruit.

Wednesday: Oven roasted chicken quarter, brown rice pilaf, chopped spinach, whole wheat bread, mandarin oranges.

Thursday: Pasta fagioli with crackers, seafood salad plate on a bed of lettuce with tomato and beet salad, Portuguese roll, diet fruited Jell-O with whipped topping.

And for planning ahead—

Monday: January 12: Pork loin with gravy, apple stuffing, applesauce garnish, Scandinavian mixed vegetables, rye bread, apricots.

Tuesday: January 13: Chicken parmesan, penne with marinara sauce, tossed salad with tomato and Italian dressing, parmesan cheese, garlic bread, chocolate chip cookie.
