Jackie “Jack” David Corbitt, of Southbury, formerly of Newtown, passed away unexpectedly on December 30, 2021. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend. He will be dearly missed by so many.

Jack was born in Miami, Florida on October 16, 1941, to James and Hazel Corbitt. He was predeceased by three siblings, Helen Campbell, James Corbitt, and Thomas Corbitt. He graduated from Hialeah High School in 1960, where he was a star athlete on both the baseball and football fields. Jack served in the United States Air Force before earning a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from Miami Dade Community College. He then followed his love for aviation and attended Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University where he earned a degree in Aviation Sciences.

Jack met and married his lifetime sweetheart Jane in 1963. Together they traveled the world, raised a family, built homes, and bettered the communities they lived in. He spent many years of his distinguished career flying as a captain for Eastern Airlines and Korean Airlines respectively. After stepping away from commercial flying, he served as an aviation safety inspector for the Federal Aviation Administration in New York and Miami until retiring his wings in 2013.

Jack was a Newtown resident for over 25 years and, as a man of faith, was a devoted member of the Newtown United Methodist Church. He had a selfless and kind soul and always left the people around him feeling loved and respected. Jack had the unconditional love of his four daughters who adored his gentle manner, calming voice, and inspirational spirit. He was admired by countless others across the globe who were lucky enough to know him.

Having a lifelong passion for golf, he loved to play with his family and friends. He never missed the sporting events and other activities of his 12 adoring grandchildren and was often seen in the stands wearing their school colors. They were the center of his world and he was their everything. He was an avid fan of the New York Yankees, the Miami Dolphins, and the UConn Lady Huskies basketball team. He served on several volunteer boards over many years, often taking leadership roles and making a positive difference in the lives of many people. He was truly a man for others.

Jack recently celebrated his 80th birthday surrounded by his loving family, drinking great wine, and singing Johnny Cash karaoke.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Jane; daughters and (sons-in-law), Christine Johnson (Arthur), Susan O’Connor (Edward), Jacqueline Guglielmo (Joseph) and Jennifer Carroll (Sean); 12 adoring grandchildren: Lauren, Corbitt, Taylor, Kylie, Kendall, Spencer, Liam, Jayne, Sarah, Jack, Charlie, and Grace; great-grandson, Brady – AKA Rocket Man; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends are welcome to attend a funeral service to be held at the Newtown United Methodist Church, at 11 am, on January 6, and are asked to follow proper COVID guidelines. A private burial will follow.

In lieu of flowers, a donation in Jack’s name can be made to the Newtown United Methodist Church, 92 Church Hill Road, Newtown CT 06470.

Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street, Newtown is serving the family.
