Reckless Driving

After learning that Newtown Police held a warrant for his arrest, Brian Riguzzi, 39, of Wappingers Falls, N.Y., turned himself over to police at the police station about 12:30 pm on January 3 and was charged with reckless driving and with failure to drive to the right in connection with an auto accident that occurred on September 20, police said.

In that accident, Riguzzi was driving an auto on Main Street that crossed the road’s centerline and struck a tractor-trailer truck, puncturing a fuel tank on the truck, resulting in the spillage of about 100 gallons of diesel fuel near 86 Main Street.

The accident closed the northern section of Main Street to traffic for about two hours. Some of the spilled fuel found its way in a nearby stream. 

Following arrest processing on January 3, police released Riguzzi on a written promise to appear in Danbury Superior Court on January 15.

Larceny

Police report that after receiving a complaint from staff at the Big Y supermarket at Newtown Shopping Village at 6 Queen Street on the afternoon of December 23, they went to the store to investigate an alleged case of shoplifting.

 Police said that after talking to store employees and viewing some surveillance video, they went to the residence of Rocco Bonanducci, 72, of 24 Pleasant Hill Road and charged him with sixth-degree larceny.

Police report that they released Bonanducci on a written promise to appear in court on January 6.

Toyota Vs Deer

At about 6:30 pm on December 28, motorist Kerry Ann Scallon, 18, of 6 Farm Field Ridge Road was driving a 2010 Toyota Yaris sedan southward near 68 Walnut Tree Hill Road, when a deer entered the roadway, resulting in a collision. Scallon was not injured. Police took no enforcement.

Warrant Case

After learning that police held an arrest warrant for her, Rowena Playfair, 62, of Bethel went to the police station about 10:35 am on December 31 and was charged with second-degree failure to appear in court, according to police.

The warrant stems from a previous case. After arrest processing, police released Playfair on $500 bail for a January 14 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

DUI Incident

Police said they stopped motorist Michael McNamara, 36, of 6 Driftway Drive near 21 Hanover Road at about 10:19 pm on January 5 to investigate.

Police said they charged McNamara with driving under the influence. He was released on $200 bail for a January 20 court appearance, police said.

Two Charges

Police report that at about 10:30 am on January 4, they spotted motorist Zachary Monahan, 25, of Bridgeport driving a motor vehicle eastward on Wasserman Way which had no front marker plate, so they stopped him to investigate.

Police said they charged Monahan with driving while under suspension. After further investigation, police said they learned there was a warrant pending against Monahan and additionally charged him with violation of a protective order.

Monahan was arraigned in court on January 5 and did not plead to the violation of a protective order charge. He is free on $10,000 bail for a January 26 court appearance.

Walnut Tree Hill Road

Police report that at about 12:11 am on December 31, motorist Gregory Hanson, 50, of 15 Evergreen Road was driving a 1977 Chevrolet K-10 pickup truck near 12 Walnut Tree Hill Road, when the truck went off the right road shoulder and then struck a tree head-on. The crash occurred near Walnut Tree Hill Road’s intersection with Haley Lane.

The Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported Hanson to Danbury Hospital for treatment of injuries, police said. Hanson received a written warning for making a restricted turn, according to police.

I-84 Crash

A two-vehicle accident occurred at the end of eastbound Interstate 84’s Exit 9 off-ramp in Hawleyville at about 6:15 pm on December 30, state police said.

In that incident, motorist Kiyoko Mizuno, 38, of Silver Springs, Md., who was driving a 2014 Buick SUV, drove into the rear end of a 2002 Honda CRV driven by Richard Covello, 48, of New Haven, state police said.

There were no injuries. State police said they verbally warned Mizuno for following too closely.

Lexus Vs Mazda

At about 11:10 am on December 27, motorist Henriqueta Vega, 55, of Monroe, who was driving a 2004 Lexus RX-330 SUV, was backing out of a parking space at Sand Hill Plaza at 228 South Main Street, when the Lexus struck a 2003 Mazda van, which was being driven by Colt McCarthy, 26, of Monroe, police said.

There were no injuries. Police took no enforcement.

Sugar Street Crash

At about 3:46 am on January 1, motorist Jaime Shore, 32, of 105 South Main Street was driving a 2001 Subaru Legacy sedan westward near 169 Sugar Street, when the Subaru went off the left road shoulder and struck a utility pole, police said.

The accident scene is near the intersection of Sugar Street and Drummers Lane.

The Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported Shore to Danbury Hospital for treatment of injuries, police said.

Police said they issued Shore a written warning for making a restricted turn.
