Seeking WWII Veterans From Kent

KENT — Kent Historical Society is preparing a book to honor all of the men and women from Kent who served in World War II in all branches of military service and the Merchant Marine. As of fall 2005, there were approximately 20 surviving veterans left of 170 men and women who served between 1939 and 1946.

The society is asking that anyone who has or had a relative from Kent who participated in WWII to share any photographs, letters, descriptions of service or journals that pertain to that service. If there are no photographs of a person in uniform, photographs taken around his or her military age will be accepted.

Besides featuring any available military records of individuals and comments from survivors or their relatives, the book will contain facsimiles of community letters that were sent biweekly to all service people from 1942 through 1945. A project started under Fire Chief Albert Edwards and directed by Maurice Child, owner of the Petit Chalet Inn, the letters included a monthly dollar and razor blade.

Information for the book is being collected and prepared by Fran Johnson and Charlotte Lindsey.

Contact Ms Johnson at 860-927-4225 or Ms Lindsey at 860-927-3724. Submissions may also be mailed to Kent Historical Society, PO Box 651, Kent CT 06757.
