Theresa Alberico, of Sandy Hook, Conn., passed away peacefully on January 28, 2022, with her family by her side. She was one week away from her 92nd birthday.

Theresa was born in Mamaroneck, N.Y., on February 5, 1930, to Joseph and Angelina (Rigano) Lanza. Theresa had one sister, Mary, and five brothers, Charlie, Anthony, Joseph, Vincent, and Frank.

Theresa is survived by her husband, Michael (married for 72 years). They were blessed with three children, Barbara of St Augustine, Fla., Michael and his wife Maria of New Rochelle, N.Y., and Cosmo and his wife Nancy of Newtown, Conn.; eight grandchildren, Michael, Alexander, Stephen, Michael III (wife Veronica), Michele Hnatiw (husband George), Matthew, Lisa Montellese (husband Justin), and Nicole Genova (husband Christopher); and six great grandchildren, Ethan, Anthony, Alyssa, Mia, Kyle, and Eric.

Theresa was a homemaker who lived in New Rochelle, N.Y., raising her family before moving to Sandy Hook in 2005. In her younger years she enjoyed volunteering in her local community and spending time with family and friends. Theresa also enjoyed traveling with her husband Michael; she was an avid golfer, and a member of numerous bowling teams. She also enjoyed playing poker and mahjong.

Theresa will be remembered for her spirited, bubbly, and passionate personality.

Calling hours will be held on Saturday, February 5, from 9:30 to 11 am at Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street, Newtown, followed by a mass at 11:30 am at St Rose of Lima Church, 46 Church Hill Road, Newtown. Given the many elderly and immune-compromised loved ones attending the services, the family asks for all guests to please take precautions in order to help prevent the potential spread of COVID-19.

Memorial donations may be made to St Jude Children’s Research Hospital at stjude.org or to Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps at newtown-ambulance.org.

The family would like to give special thanks to Theresa’s very devoted full-time caregiver, Charity Mphela, as well as dedicated caregivers, Denise Buckley and Dawn Karp. The family is also appreciative for the care given by the Newtown Emergency Services Ambulance Volunteers and care provided by Compassus Hospice Care.
