It may be chilly and snowy right now, but spring  will be here before you know it, and Town Players of Newtown are ready with plans for their 2014 season. 

The community theater’s mainstage season will begin with Tennessee Williams’s The Glass Menagerie, with performances planned for April 25 to May 17.

When Amanda Wingfield’s attempts to better her life and the lives of her children Tom and Laura, the result is heartbreak and loss. With this American classic finishing its Broadway revival in February, Town Players are pleased to be able to bring it to Newtown. Marla Manning will direct.

(Auditions for this production are scheduled for February 23 and 25.)

Paul Rudnick’s I Hate Hamlet, scheduled for June 27 to July 20, will introduce audiences to actor Andrew Rally, whose TV career is circling the drain. He has the opportunity to play Hamlet, but is unsure if he should. Will the ghost of John Barrymore show him the way? Ruth Anne Baumgartner of Fairfield will direct.

As the leaves begin to fall, there’s a definite chill in the air with J.B. Priestly’s An Inspector Calls. Inspector Goole visits the well-to-do Birling family and interrogates them regarding the suicide of a young working-class woman with whom they are all familiar. Gene Golaszewski will direct.

For those who are ready for more laughter, Lend Me A Tenor will bring it in November. The famous Italian tenor known as Il Stupdendo is scheduled for a one-night only performance of Othello at the Cleveland Grand Opera Company. The problem is, there’s another man saying he’s Il Stupendo and crazy hilarity ensues. Timothy Huebenthal will direct.

Last but not least, the Players will ring in the holiday season with A Christmas Carol. Based on the famous book by Charles Dickens and written by Christopher Schario, Gene Golaszewski will direct the unique telling of the classic Christmas tale of love, sharing and good will toward men.

In addition, Town Players will offer a special Black Box production of Fully Committed in August.

In this one-act play by Becky Mode, the audience will follow a day in the life of actor Sam Peliczowski, who mans the reservation line at Manhattan’s top eatery while waiting for his big break. In addition to fielding desperate calls from high society types, he has to deal with his own issues, such as going home for Christmas and an upcoming role at Lincoln Center. There are over 40 diverse characters in this wild one-man play, which will be directed by David Bass.
