Two Faithful Servants

To the Editor:

May I commend to your prayer list, the names of two faithful servants of God and compassionate friends to so many. Both died within the past two weeks.

Father Richard McBrien, of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Hartford and Father George Birge of the Diocese of Bridgeport were very different in stature and quite diverse in their  outreach to humanity; yet each in his own way, inspired the people to whom they were sent as apostles.

McBrien was a prolific writer who is best known as a long-time theologian at Notre Dame University and as the author of the two volume masterpiece, Catholicism, which I consider my second bible. Never one to hide from criticism, especially from ultraconservatives within his own religious persuasion, he could debate most any theological issue, and always with a spirit of charity. It is a shame that he didn't live to see the bishop of Rome, Pope Francis, support his many of his views in areas where other clerics, on all levels, attempted to send him into exile.

Father Birge, a former pastor to St Rose of Lima Church in Newtown, and in his final official assignment, Holy Trinity Church, in Sherman, also reached out to the masses of people wherever he was sent. George, too, possessed many gifts although they differed greatly from Richard's. He had little flair for the dramatic, that often manifests itself in leaders of all faith traditions nor was he acclaimed for fiery sermons that many feel essential to an inspiring church service. But, for those who appreciate the spirit of St Francis of Assisi who gave us the axiom: "preach the gospel often and when necessary, use words," we can hear this fine pastor of souls preaching with his compassionate way of life. His arms were open to people of all faith traditions and cultures. He often spoke of his inspiration by George Fox, a leader of the Friends (the Quaker community.)

May you, Richard and George, receive the crown of life prepared for you from the very foundation of the world! Rest, dear friends, in the fullness of peace!
