On Saturday, February 18, Trinity Church will offer the Newtown community a Mardi Gras dinner.

Mardi Gras — French: Fat Tuesday — is a festival day typically celebrated to mark the close of the pre-Lenten season with the custom of using all the fats in the home before Lent in preparation for fasting and abstinence.

The public is invited to join a Cajun inspired meal with a menu to include Gumbo Yah Yah (chicken/sausage), Crawfish Etouffee, Red Beans and Sausage, Shrimp Jambalaya, and vegetarian Etouffee. There will also be macaroni and cheese and chicken nuggets available for the children.

The church’s Children’s Ministry Coordinator will offer some fun Mardi Gras-themed activities.

Members of Trinity Episcopal Church recently took the first step toward Mardi Gras, with a King’s Cake celebration and competition. Organizers are already looking toward two special events hosted by the church, both planned for mid-February.

Spencer DeBrock and his friend from Texas, Mary Grace Fletcher, were voted as creators of Best Looking Cake.

Additionally two plastic babies were hidden in the cakes, to identify the 2023 Mardi Gras King and Queen. Floyd Higgins and Nancy Maxwell found the traditional King Cake items, and were rewarded with the honorary titles.

Both are planning to attend their coronation on February 18, during the 2023 Mardi Gras dinner-celebration.

Cost is $15 per person, free for age 10 and under. Registration is required and closes February 12 so that organizers can properly plan for food.
