An opportunity to see a working home solar panel installation will be offered to Newtown residents on Saturday, February 8, at a Solar Open House.

The event will take place at 9 Grand Place from 1 to 3 pm, hosted by Nina and David Stout, who recently joined Solarize Newtown, an initiative promoting home solar use. The Stouts are among roughly 19 residences that have gone solar through this town- and state-supported program.

Newtown’s Sustainable Energy Commission Chair Kathy Quinn said that despite the weather, installations through Astrum Solar continue. The last workshop in January saw roughly 50 attendees, Ms Quinn said.

“Interest is still strong,” she said. Home site assessments are free.

The more Newtown homeowners that participate in the Solarize program, the lower the price drops for everyone. The town so far has reached the second to lowest of a tiered pricing system.

The Solarize program offers financing options that make it possible to install solar with little or no money down, and a lease option that allows customers to be cash flow positive from as early as the first month of installation.

The loan and lease options available through Energize CT, the state’s energy initiative, offer flexible long-term, affordable financing designed to allow homeowners to undertake almost any measure that reduces a home’s fuel or electricity usage. These financing options are in addition to the significant discounts offered through the Solarize program.

Solarize Newtown has been extended to provide homeowners the opportunity to research options for energy cost savings.
