Want to get in shape? Help fight cancer? Meet like minded people?

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) offers Team In Training (TNT), an endurance sports program for all ability levels. Participating in running, walking, cycling, triathlon and hiking events benefit life saving cancer research and honor the patient heroes of LLS. Whether one is planning to lace up their sneakers for the first time since high school, or looking to set a personal best, LLS Team In Training has the training plan and support team to get you there.

An informational meeting had been scheduled for February 13 in Newtown, but was cancelled due to the impending snowstorm.

While that event will not be rescheduled, according to LLS Campaign Assistant Kate Thompson, other info sessions are scheduled across the state in upcoming weeks. Reservations for any program can be done online (separate web addresses follow) or by calling 203-665-1452 for any of the programs.

The first one will be Saturday, February 15, at 11:30 am, at Big Sky Gym, 58 Commerce Court in Newington. Attendees will learn about Team In Training’s cycle and triathlon programs, a 16-week training and fundraising campaign to benefit LLS. The program will begin with a spin class for all levels, followed by a question and answer session.

Competitions are available on June 1, June 22 and August 3.

Cost is $5 per person, and all are asked to bring water and wear bike shorts. Those who have never been to Big Sky before are asked to arrive before 11 to complete paperwork. Space is limited and reservations are suggested; visit http://tinyurl.com/spintnt.

On Sunday, February 16, a short hike at Sleeping Giant State Park in Hamden will serve as an informal preview of TNT’s hike program. The program will include the opportunity to meet the coach and support staff, learn about the team, have questions answered while enjoying snacks and socializing. The team will be training to hike Yosemite on June 14.

An info session is planned for Tuesday, February 18, at Clinton Town Hall, 54 East Main Street. A formal presentation is scheduled to begin at 6:30 pm.

The largest event is scheduled for Saturday, February 22, at 10 at True Athletics, 850 Sherman Avenue in Hamden. A formal kick-off for all events will begin at 10, but those who have not participated in any previous TNT events are asked to arrive by 9 am in order to fill out registration forms and attend an info session to learn about the program.

The Hamden event, said Ms Thompson, is the largest TNT meeting.

“At 10 am all of our current 55 participants will be joining us (TNT staff) and all our coaches to talk fundraising, talk about the events and really kick off the summer season,” she said via email. “This is a fun meeting and very motivational. This is a great meeting to attend to get a little taste of what TNT is all about.

“Anyone interested in Team in Training and not yet signed up, please arrive at 9 am for a great one on one meeting with our staff,” she added.

Newtown’s Team In Training info session planned for February 13 has been cancelled, but anyone interested in the program has four more opportunities to learn about the program during public events before the end of the month.
