On The Courts — Youth Basketball Highlights

Girls Midgets

Chili Peppers vs Lightning: For the Peppers, Rylee Mulligan and Teresa Forlenzo led the offense while Jenna Carvahlo and Rachel Phillips were strong on defense. For the Lightning, Stephanie Helstern and Lauren Adams led the offense while Savannah LaFerriere and Lucy Draper led the defense.

Cheese Doodles vs Purple People Eaters: For the Doodles, Lauren Carrino and Kira Smith led the offense and Jenna Gonski and Rachel Tomasino were tough on defense. For the Purple People Eaters, Lexi Leidlin and Madison Findley led the offense and Alex Fudderman was strong on defense

Dynamites vs Junior Mints: For the Dynamites, Ava Petrellese and Sarah Houle led the offense while Sarah Brittin and Rebecca Gavel were tough on defense. For the Mints, Brooke Antous and Nicki Dapra led the offense while Vanessa Tucker and Danny Otero led the defense.

Storm vs Yellow Jackets: For the Storm, Caitlyn Child and Ashley Solomon led the offense while Nicole Lillis and Katie McCabe were tough on defense. For the Jackets, Alexis Mason and Julia Haskins led the offense and Alexandra Nuzzo and Allie Tassiello played strong defense.

Grade 7 Travel

Newtown 37, Bethel 24: Newtown relied on stifling team defense and crisp passing on the way to picking up its fourth win in five games. With only seven players in uniform, Newtown posted a season-high 11 assists and recorded its most balanced scoring attack to date. Kerry Scalon led Newtown with 10 points, Mary Joe Rossi added 9 and Emily Maher had 7 points. Danielle Shine grabbed 9 rebounds, Amanda Crowell blocked 7 shots and Tess Murray came up with several key steals to snuff out Bethel’s hope for a second-half comeback.

Jr Boys

Nighthawks 57, Bricklayers 40: For the Nighthawks, Mike Scharfenberg was the high scorer with 34 points. Matt Spencer had 3 assists and Mike LoBuglio was the defensive star. Matt Wood scored 8 points and Miles LoBuglio added 6 key points. Brock Chimileski, Nick Norberg and Dan Winn played great defense. For the Bricklayers, Jack Champagne was the high scorer with 21 points. Charlie Helgren had 10 steals and Matthew Baldino had 7 rebounds.

Huskies 60, Running Rebels 51: For the Huskies, Pat Mullins was the high scorer with 19 points and Dean Demers had 16 points. Grant Ricketts had 11 assists, Mike Davenport had 3 steals and Jeff Peterson had 7 rebounds. For the Running Rebels, Christian Mather was the high scorer with 18 points and 8 rebounds. Riley Cross had 13 points, Kyle Buckley had 4 assists and Greg LaRussa had 4 steals.

Trash Talkers 57, Bullets 47: For the Trash Talkers, Brandon Marks was the high scorer with 18 points and 9 assists. Jamie MacDonald was the defensive star and had 14 rebounds. Nick Swenson had 15 points, 4 steals and 8 rebounds. For the Bullets, Kevin Shpunt was the high scorer with 16 points. Chris Carroll was the assist leader, Tyler Gibney was the defensive star and Jimmy Leidlein was the rebound leader.

The Warriors 68, Wildcats 65: For The Warriors, Eric Fiore was the high scorer with 27 points and Brandon Cooper added 22 points. PJ Hickey had 3 assists, Ryan Pisani had 8 steals and Eric Pisani had 10 rebounds. Brian Arnold, Pat Pierce and Colin Post all played well. For the Wildcats, Wyatt Depuy was the high scorer with 20 points, Andrew Martinez had 15 points, Virgil Procaccini had 13 points and Patrick Rowley played good defense.

Tar Heels 52, Knicks 19: For the Tar Heels, Jake Feinstein was the high scorer with 15 points. Matt Rahetelli had 5 assists, Steve Rahr had 5 steals and Ben Payne had 10 rebounds. For the Knicks, Grant Larerd was the high scorer with 6 points. Matt White was the defensive star and Robbie Hughes was the rebound leader.

Heat 66, Grizzlies 38: For the Heat, Justin DeVellis was the high scorer with 36 points. John Meyers had 8 points. Colton Spasta had 5 assists, Spencer Brindley had 3 steals and Nick Madden had 11 rebounds. For the Grizzlies, Ty Runkle was the high scorer with 17 points, including five 3-pointers. Garrison Buzzanca had 6 assists, Tommy Catalina had 3 steals and Max Lopez had 6 rebounds.

Gators 45, The Team 39: For the Gators, Pat Thornberg was the high scorer with 14 points. Jordan Sock had 8 points. Wes Morlock had 4 assists, Sean Reilly had 2 steals and Austin Hubbert had 5 rebounds. For The Team, Greg Horne was the high scorer with 14 points. Joe Davis had 4 assists and Nick Marcinek had 3 steals.

Celtics 46, Nets 40: For the Celtics, Cameron McClearly, Christian Barrett and Matt Lindell combined for 31 points. Tom Floros had 4 assists, Greg LaDestro had 3 steals and Andrew Ryan had 10 rebounds. For the Nets, Justin Adsitt-Weiner had 8 points. Brendon Peterson had 4 assists, David Cartisano had 4 steals and Angel Santos had 8 rebounds. Sam Boland and Joe Calbo played great defense.

Grade 6 Boys

Heat 35, Celtics 35: Matt Bouton, Colin Morrissey and Will Swain combined for 22 points as the Heat avenged a regular season loss to the Celtics in an exhibition match. Harry Duffy’s inspired all-around play enabled the Heat to defend well, gather loose balls and limit turnovers. The solid contributions by all Heat players have them playing with confidence as they prepare for the playoffs. Leading the C’s offense was Ryan Whitton who pumped in 8 points and also had 3 boards and 2 steals. Also playing well for the Celtics were Liam Decker (2 boards and 1 steal), Connor Ryan (4 points and 1 steal) and Brennan O’Sullivan (4 boards).

Wolves 32, Gators 27: Michael Cirone led the Wolves’ offensive attack, scoring 12 points and handing out several assists. Eric Cascone played his finest game of the year with 8 points, 10 rebounds and 2 blocked shots. Kaj Djonne and Jeremy Fellin continued their outstanding play on both ends of the floor, running the offense and anchoring the defense. Jason Ferrari led the Gators on offense with stellar play and 10 points. Mitchell Godin and Brian Raab played topnotch defense. Alec Clark was an animal forcing turnovers and easy transition points for the Gators. Dan Hamula also contributed by knocking down a jumper. Robbie McCabe dominated the boards with numerous rebounds.

Screaming Eagles 35, Junkyard Dogs 25: For the Eagles, Shane Quimby scored a career high 10 points and used his suffocating defensive skills to turn the game around after the Screamers fell behind. Bobby Silver and Christian Hoffman turned up the defensive heat. Connor LeMay ran the second half offense effortlessly, and Ryan Sullivan, gutting it out a painfully bruised knee, smoothly broke the fourth quarter press. Chris Hartley was all over the boards, scoring 6 points on offensive putbacks. For the Dogs, “Broadway” Joe Santella and Kyle McGrath combined for 12 points to power the offense. Santella, playing in the low post for the first time, muscled much bigger men for his points. The high-flying McGrath utilized his blinding speed on both ends of the court. Baxter Hankin and Nick Rubino, both stepping into the point guard position for the first time, ran the Dog offense like seasoned veterans.

Nets 33, Semi Pros 29: The Nets received a strong effort from all players with Bobby Archiere leading the scoring with 18 points. Ryan Szalay crashed the boards to lead the team with 7 rebounds. Andrew King worked off the low post to deal out 3 assists, and Curtis Giles kicked in on defense when the team needed it most. James Burdette and Harry DePuy teamed up to score 21 points to lead the Semi Pros’ offensive attack. Eric Gibbons and Conrad Morris also combined for another 7 points as well. Michael Unschuld, Tommy Shaker and Mark Dowling led the defensive effort coming up with 3 steals each.

Dunkeys 36, Dragons 34: Peter Manfredonia (6 points) sealed the victory with 3 seconds left by scoring on a strong rebound for the Dunkeys. Alex Daignault scored 9 points and played aggressive defense. Alex Klang controlled the boards. Mason Galanis was on fire scoring 4 points from downtown. For the Dragons, David Csordas and Tommy Rahr each had 6 points, and Robby Schreiber added 4.

On the defensive end, Sean Kemsley and Colton Moroney played well in a tight game that wasn’t decided until the final buzzer.
