Drug Charges

After learning that police held a warrant for his arrest, a boy turned himself over to police at the police station about 9 pm on February 27 and was charged with possession of narcotics, failure to keep prescription narcotics in their original container, and possession of narcotics with intent to sell.

The arrest stems from an incident that occurred at Newtown High School last December 6. After processing the arrest, police released the boy on $25,000 bail for a March 5 court appearance.

Because the person arrested was under age 18 when the incident occurred, his identity is shielded from disclosure by state law.

Moving

Violations

Police report that they stopped motorist Michael Servidio, 33, of Bethel for traveling fast in the area of Queen Street and Borough Lane at about 5:37 pm on February 22.

After investigating, police said they charged Servidio with traveling unreasonably fast and with driving with a suspended license.

Police released Servidio on $100 bail for a March 6 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

DUI Charge

Police said that at about 11:21 pm on February 24, they spotted a one-vehicle accident that had occurred near 100 Walnut Tree Hill Road, near that street’s intersection with Black Bridge Road.

Police said that their investigation showed that motorist Meghann Freeman, 28, of 121-A Walnut Tree Hill Road, who was driving a 1997 Hyundai Sonata sedan, was backing up the vehicle when she backed off of the roadway and struck a mailbox post, after which the auto stopped atop a stone wall. The accident damaged the vehicle’s undercarriage.

There were no injuries. Police said that after investigating, they charged Freeman with driving under the influence and with unsafe backing. Freeman was released on $100 bail for a March 13 court appearance, police said.

Volvo Off Road

At about 4:36 pm on February 21, motorist Benjamin Lussier, 18, of Madison, who was driving a 1998 Volvo S-70 sedan, traveled off the roadway and struck some wooden guardrails near 103 South Main Street, police report.

Lussier was not injured. Police said they issued him an infraction on charges of making a restricted turn and failure to carry an automotive insurance identification card.

Curbing

Police report two motor vehicle accidents that occurred about 20 minutes apart on Orchard Hill Road, near its intersection with Pebble Road, on the night of February 24.

Motorist Pamela Campbell, 46, of 39 Poverty Hollow Road was driving a 2009 Mercedes-Benz ML-350 SUV northward on Orchard Hill Road at about 8:47 pm, when her vehicle collided with a fragment of curbing that had been plowed out onto the road, police said.

At about 9:09 pm, motorist Lisa Berger, 51, of 13 Monitor Hill Road, who was driving a 2006 Honda Odyssey minivan northward on Orchard Hill Road, also hit a curbing fragment that had been plowed out onto the road, according to police. 

There were no injuries or enforcement actions taken in either accident, police said.

Church Hill Collision

A two-vehicle accident involving a compact car and a tractor-trailer truck occurred near 52 Church Hill Road at about 4 pm on February 24, police said.

Police said that motorist David Goncalves, 45, of Danbury, who was driving a 1993 Ford Escort sedan, was exiting a driveway and attempting to make a left turn, when a westbound tractor-trailer truck driven by Michael Kudrak, 27, of East Hampton collided with the Ford.

There were no injuries. Police said they issued Goncalves an infraction for failure to grant the right of way.

Two SUV’s

A vehicular collision happened at the intersection of Boggs Hill Road and Spring Road about 8:34 am on February 24.

Motorist Sonia Barbosa, 58, of Mt Pleasant Road was driving a 2004 Chevrolet TrailBlazer SUV westward on Spring Road, as motorist Anne Laporta, 46, of Dover Circle was driving a 2011 Nissan Rogue SUV northward on Boggs Hill Road, according to police.

As the Chevrolet reached the intersection of the two streets, it was unable to stop at a stop sign and it collided with the Nissan, police said.

There were no injuries. Police said they verbally warned Barbosa for traveling too fast for conditions and for a stop sign violation.

Sedan Vs Mail Truck

At about 5:54 pm on February 21, motorist Xiaodong Yan, 48, of New Milford was driving a 1995 Toyota Camry sedan northward near 110 Mt Pleasant Road and was traveling behind a US Mail delivery truck, police said.

The mail truck, which was driven by Nadine Bailey, 43, Bridgeport, slowed in preparing to deliver some mail, police said.

The Toyota attempted to slow, but slid on some wet pavement and struck the rear end of the mail truck, police said.

There were no injuries. Police said they verbally warned Yan for following too closely.

Three Vehicles

A three-vehicle collision took place at the intersection of South Main Street, Botsford Hill Road, and Meadowbrook Road about 11:04 am on February 25.

Motorist Harvey Polansky, 58, of Trumbull, who was driving a 2011 Subaru Legacy sedan northward on South Main Street, stopped at a traffic signal there, police report. Northbound motorist Juraita Sakalauskiene, 33, of Monroe, who was driving a 2004 Honda Civic sedan, then stopped behind the Subaru, police report.

Northbound motorist Steven Bruen, 52, of Sherman, who was driving a 2000 Chevrolet van, failed to stop, striking the rear end of the Honda, thus pushing the Honda into the rear end of the Subaru, police said.

There were no injuries. Bruen received an infraction for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart, police report.

101 MPH

State police said that they signaled for motorist Jack Britton, 40, of Danbury to stop on eastbound Interstate 84, east of Exit 11, at about 1 am on February 18 after their laser speed detector indicated that he was traveling 101 miles per hour.

Britton engaged them in pursuit, state police said. Britton then got off I-84 at Exit 13 in Southbury, after which he was apprehended on Main Street South near Lakeside Road, state police said.

State police arrested Britton on charges of driving under suspension, reckless driving, engaging police in pursuit, violating a stop sign, and second-degree reckless endangerment.

Britton was released on $10,000 bail for a February 27 court appearance.

Exit 11 Ramp

State police report that motorist Bradley Chalk, 57, of Lancaster, Penn, was driving a 2011 Ford Ranger pickup truck on the combined on-ramp at Exit 11 of Interstate 84 at about 6 pm on February 24 and was entering the left fork of the ramp to go onto westbound I-84, when an unknown tractor-trailer truck swerved toward the Ford, causing Chalk to turn to the right to avoid contact.

The Ford then slid onto a snow-covered road shoulder and struck a road sign, state police said. Chalk was not injured.

Guardrail

Sate police said that motorist Melvin Campbell, 25, of West Haven was driving a 1999 Chrysler Concorde sedan on the Exit 10 off-ramp of eastbound Interstate 84 at about 7:40 am on February 23, when he struck the metal flex-beam guardrailing along the left road shoulder of the ramp.

Campbell was not injured. State police said Campbell failed to maintain the proper lane.

Jewelry Found

Police said that at about 2 pm on February 27, a person brought to the police station for safekeeping a piece of jewelry which was found at Dickinson Park, off Elm Drive. The jewelry consists of a crucifix which is attached to a chain. Police said the owner of the jewelry should contact them to claim the item at the police station at 3 Main Street, telephone 203-426-5841.

MV Violations

Police report that they stopped motorist Lena Ghossaini, 24, of 113 South Main Street, who was driving a 2003 Ford Taurus sedan northward near 36 Queen Street at about 5:47 pm on February 26, because Ghossaini was traveling fast.

After investigating, police charged her with traveling unreasonably fast, driving with a suspended license, and failure to notify the state Department of Motor Vehicles of an address change.

Police said they released Ghossaini on $40 bail for a March 13 court appearance.

Rollover

Motorist Sean Decker, 18, of 46 Cobblers Mill Road was driving a 2009 Honda Civic sedan southward on South Main Street about 9:30 pm on February 22, when Decker attempted to avoid a deer in the road, but lost control of the vehicle and traveled into the northbound lane, police said.

The Honda then struck a mailbox and a street sign, after which it went up an embankment near Homestead Lane and rolled over completely, coming to rest on its wheels, police said.

Ambulance volunteers treated Decker for a leg cut, police said. Botsford firefighters responded to the accident. Police said they issued Decker a written warning for making a restricted turn.

Flagpole Intersection

A two-vehicle accident happened at the flagpole intersection where Main Street, Church Hill Road, and West Street meet at about 6:06 pm on February 17.

Police said motorist Kelly Scholl, 50, of Middlebury, who was driving a 2008 Mazda 3 sedan, was southbound on Main Street and then stopped at the flagpole in preparing to make a left turn onto eastbound Church Hill Road.

At that time, motorist Charles Loria, 70, of Seymour, who was driving a 2000 Chevrolet Tahoe SUV, stopped at a stop sign on westbound Church Hill Road and was preparing to make left turn onto southbound Main Street.

As the Chevrolet attempted to make the left turn, the Chevrolet struck the Mazda, police said. There were no injuries. Police said they gave Loria an infraction for failure to grant the right of way.

Copper Theft

Police are investigating the theft of some copper drainage gutters and leaders from the exterior of a commercial building at 320 South Main Street, which is on the corner of South Main Street and Blue Spruce Drive in Botsford.

Police said they received a call about 7 pm on February 27 informing them that sometime between 4:30 pm on Friday, February 24, and 5:30 pm on Monday, February 27, someone stole the copper items from the building’s exterior.

The stolen items are estimated to be worth about $1,425, police said. The motive for such thefts typically is to sell the stolen copper as scrap metal for cash.
