Maple Syrup Demos At Flanders

WOODBURY — Flanders Nature Center & Land Trust will continue its New England tradition of demonstrating the entire process of maple syrup production on three consecutive weekends beginning March 5.

Programs will be offered from 1 to 4 pm at Flanders’ Sugar House on Saturdays and Sundays, March 5-6, 12-13 and 19-20.

The public is invited to learn the history, science and humor of making maple syrup, from the tapping of maple trees, to the collecting of sap from Flanders and neighboring Woodbury maples, and then viewing the final process of boiling the sap into syrup.

Visitors will learn that it takes approximately 50 gallons of sap to make one gallon of syrup, that a maple tree is at least 30 years old and 12 inches in diameter before it is tapped, and that tapping does no permanent damage to the tree.  These and other interesting facts will be part of the program offered this year for everyone’s enjoyment and education.

In addition, educational programs tailored to a group’s interest in maple sugaring can be arranged by calling Flanders at 203-263-3711.

No fee or registration is necessary. The Sugar House is on Church Hill Road off Flanders Road in Woodbury; signs are posted.
