MONROE — Sparked by Peter Horan's record-setting backstroke performance and backed by a collective effort, the Newtown High School boys' swim team achieved its goal and earned second place in the South-West Conference championship meet, at Masuk High on March 4.

Horan set SWC 100 yard backstroke event record in a time of 51.88 seconds, one of his pair of first-place finishes in the meet. He also won the 100 yard freestyle event in a time of 47.37. Horan set both school records in the process.

Perennial powerhouse Pomperaug of Southbury won to nobody’s surprise, recording a score of 661. The battle for second unfolded with Newtown Coach Adam Fielding’s Nighthawks recording 321 to claim the victory of sorts.

Host Masuk was a bit of a surprise in earning third with 284 points. New Milford and Brookfield, the teams that gave Newtown the most trouble this season — outside of Pomperaug — finished fourth and fifth with 267 and 285 points, respectively.

Connor Kwarcinski was second in the 50 free, sprinting to the finish in 22.78.

The Nighthawks scored big points in relay events with a trio of third-place finishes. The 200 medley relay team of Horan, Grant Carson, Gabe Petertonjes, and Kris Luci-Bernard clocked in at 1:44.13 to begin the meet.

Newtown’s 200 free relay of Kwarcinski, Kris Luci-Bernard, Max Luci-Bernard, and Matt Irving had a time of 1:33.79.

The 400 relay contingent of Kwarcinski, Max Luci-Bernard, Irving, and Horan finished in 3:22.35.
