Hawks Have Standouts In SWC Championships

MONROE — Newtown High School's boys' swimming and diving team wrapped up the South-West Conference championships with a trio of first-place race finishes at Masuk High on March 6.

As a team, the Nighthawks placed fourth in the championships, which included a diving competition at Pomperaug in Southbury two days earlier.

The Nighthawks had 299.5 points; Pomperaug was first with 557, Masuk second with 472, and Brookfield third with 396.5.

Newtown's 200 yard medley relay team of Peter Horan, Colden Bobowick, Mason Suba, and Rick Irving began the swim competition with a first-place finish, clocking in at 1:42.11, narrowly edging Masuk's time of 1:42.12 by the slimmest of margins.

Irving won the next event, the 200 freestyle race, with a time of 1:47.02. Irving earned another win in the 100 free with a time of 48.28.

Bobowick was runner-up in the 100 breaststroke race in 1:02.98.

Suba tied Brookfield's Chase Vesey for second in the 100 butterfly event in 54.14, and was fourth in the 50 free in a time of 22.78.

Dan Godino placed third in the 500, making his final touch in 4:59.78.

Newtown's 200 free relay team of Bobowick, Max Luci-Bernard, Godino, and Jack Wojtowicz was fifth in 1:38.10.

Horan came in sixth in the 100 backstroke in 58.85.

The 400 relay team of Suba, Godino, Horan, and Irving was third in 3:35.36.

Joe Moran was 11th in diving with a score of 255.85.
