Swim And Dive Squad Tops Barlow-Bethel
Newtown High School’s boys’ swimming and diving team defeated visiting Joel Barlow-Bethel 89-73 on March 2.
It was Senior Night, and the Nighthawks honored Colden Bobowick, Evan Wei, Joe Moran, and John Boccuzzi III.
The Nighthawks earned first place in six of the first nine events to seal the team win and exhibitioned the final three races.
Newtown’s 200 yard medley relay contingent of Peter Horan, Colden Bobowick, Gabe Petertonjes, and Max Luci-Bernard finished first in a time of 1:47.48.
Dan Godino (1:53.21), Connor Kwarcinski (2:02.72), and James Guerrieri (2:10.57) gave the Nighthawks a one-two-three finish in the 200 freestyle race.
Bobowick was second in the 200 individual medley race in a time of 2:18.26. Peter Horan was second in the 50 free in 22.85.
Moran was first in the diving competition, with a score of 180.25.
Petertonjes won the 100 butterfly race, making his final touch in 1:01.68, just ahead of teammate and second-place event finisher Luci-Bernard, who finished in 1:02.39.
In the 100 free, NHS had another one-two outcome as Kwarcinski won in 53.81 and Matt Irving placed second in 55.11.
James Guerrieri was second in the 500 free, finishing in 5:54.01.
In the 200 free relay event, Godino, Grant Carson, Guerrieri, and Irving came in first in 1:47.35.
Horan was fastest to complete the 100 backstroke race, completing the event in just under 57 seconds. Bobowick was the first to finish the 100 breaststroke event, finishing in 1:07.91.
There was plenty of drama and pool deck cheering in the final competition of the meet, as Newtown’s 400 yard freestyle relay team narrowly missed a come-from-behind victory. The team of Horan, Guerrieri, Bobowick, and Luci-Bernard nearly overcame the opposition before being edged out by a mere 16 hundredths of second, finishing in 3:43.68 to Barlow’s relay team time of 3:43.52.
