The Newtown Police Department supports the Special Olympics of Connecticut (SOCT), and participates in fundraising efforts to help the SOCT stage its various events, according to a statement from town police.

On Saturday, March 25, six Newtown police officers plan to participate in the Penguin Plunge fundraiser for SOCT at Compo Beach in Westport. The six officers will plunge into the icy waters of Long Island Sound to raise public awareness and money for the program. Planning to participate are Sergeant Matthew Wood and Officers Steven Borges, Adam James, John McDermott, Steven Siecienski and Stephanie Vegerano.

Newtown police officers also volunteer to participate in the annual Special Olympics Torch Run that is held on local roads during the first week of June.

The Connecticut Special Olympics provides sports training for people with intellectual disabilities, as well as their "unified partner" teammates. Unified partners do not have intellectual disabilities.

Newtown police are seeking donations from the public to help support the Special Olympics program. Donations can be made through a fundraising website at. Also, people who want to support the Special Olympics may contact Sgt Wood or Ofc Vegerano at the police station at 203 426-5841. classy.org/team/103917
