BETHEL — Newtown High School’s girls’ and boys’ indoor track teams had their first competition of the abbreviated winter season when the Nighthawks and four New Milford team representatives went to Bethel High School’s Track and Field Center on March 5.

The meet did not feature head-to-head team scoring, but runners, jumpers, and throwers had their event times and distances recorded and had a chance to work on their skills, many with an eye on a potential full outdoor spring campaign.

Competitors wore masks, and relay racers also wore gloves as part of coronavirus protocol.

Becky Osborne, head coach of the NHS boys, said the Nighthawks were appreciative of Bethel High’s hospitality and grateful to Bethel coaches Yvonne Grimes and Bob Fontaine for hosting this and other meets at the Bethel complex.

Newtown was scheduled to have another meet in Bethel on March 11, and will visit Weston on March 18.
