DANBURY— In conjunction with several major NCAA Division I, II and III programs and leagues across the country, Western Connecticut State University announces that all spring intercollegiate sports activities at the institution have been canceled, effective immediately, in response to the coronavirus public health crisis and for the safety of student-athletes, faculty and staff members at the Danbury, Conn. campus.

“This is a very difficult day for WestConn Athletics, as reality is sinking in for many, but this decision was needed to protect the health and well-being of all of student-athletes, coaches, and staff going forward,” stated Lori R. Mazza, Director of Athletics and Recreational Sports.

The Colonials have five spring sport programs that are affected — baseball, men’s and women’s lacrosse, softball, and men’s tennis. Five fall-sport programs, field hockey, football, men’s and women’s soccer, and women’s volleyball, that are in nontraditional seasons this spring, are not canceled at this time, according to the release.

“This situation is extremely heartbreaking for all of us, especially for our student-athletes, our seniors, their families, and coaches,” added Mazza. “With that said, I want to thank our seniors for their leadership during their time here at WestConn. You have guided your team with the passion and love of a senior class, and for that we are forever grateful. We will remain resilient and hopeful that the academic year will continue as scheduled, especially as we continue to navigate these uncharted waters.”
