Hockey Team Earns Shutout Against Housatonic

Phil Makris scored his 50th career high school goal and Adrian Wadhwa and James Celentano also scored in the Newtown-New Fairfield co-op team’s 3-0 blanking of the Housatonic co-op team, at Danbury Ice Arena, on March 13.

Celentano was assisted by Gio Cucco and Jack Benzing. Wadhwa’s first goal of the season came on a top off a shot from the point by Ashton Albertson, a freshman who picked up his first career high school point. Makris was set up by Eli Kirby and goaltender Markus Paltauf for his eighth of the year.

Paltauf made six saves and Christopher Ligouri had a dozen stops as the tandem split time in net for the combined shutout.

The Nighthawks, after skating to a 2-2 tie with Masuk of Monroe on March 17, are to take on Joel Barlow-Weston-Abbott Tech in the quarterfinal round of the Southern Connecticut/ South-West Conference tournament quarterfinals, Saturday, March 20, in Danbury; faceoff is set for 3:10 pm. Newtown-New Fairfield is seeded third and the Barlow co-op is sixth in the tourney. The top two seed have byes. Newtown defeated Barlow twice during the regular season.
