Elizabeth F. Smith, age 84, died peacefully surrounded by her daughter, Cynthia, grandchild Chloe, and her ever-present companion Izzy the pug on Tuesday, March 2. She was born in Hyannis, Cape Cod, Mass., on September 17, 1936, to John and Clara Field.

Betsy, as she was known to her friends and family, grew up in Sandwich, Mass., and later in Milford, Conn., where she met the love of her life, Kenneth Smith of Milford; they married on October 15, 1955, during The Big Flood. They moved to Newtown, where they raised their four children: Eric, Stephen, and Darren Smith, and Cynthia “Cindy” Smith Hanna. They retired to Hot Springs Village, Ark. They shared 57 years of marriage until Ken passed in 2001.

Betsy then moved to live with her daughter in Santa Fe, N.M.

She is now with her beloved husband, Ken; two sons, Eric and Stephen; and brother, John Field. She was “Mimi” to her seven grandchildren: Ken and Holly Smith, Ben and Chloe Hanna, and Delaney, Kendall, and Garrett Smith. She is survived by her son Darren and wife. Diana Smith; daughter, Cynthia, and husband, Ian Hanna; daughter-in-law Kathy Smith; seven grandchildren; and her sister, Ginny Field.

She lived her life with an amazing wit and contagious sense of humor. She gave of herself freely, with true love and compassion, and made it her life’s work to care for others. She will be dearly missed.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Zia United Methodist Church, 3368 Governor Miles Road, Santa Fe NM 87507; info@ziaumc.org.
