SCAN Issues Call For Artists Ahead Of 2024 Spring Juried Show & Sale, Planning One-Day Watercolor Workshop

The Society of the Creative Arts of Newtown (SCAN) will be presenting its annual Spring Juried Show & Sale at Art and Frame Gallery, 77 Main Street, April 5 through May 24. Artists are invited to submit works for the juried presentation.

The group is also planning to host “Manet’s Florals,” a one-day workshop with Roberta Shea.

Gallery hours for the spring show and sale will be Monday through Saturday, 10 am to 6 pm.

Media accepted into the show will include works in watercolor, oil, acrylic, pastel, graphics, printmaking, sculpture (with its own stand), and mixed media (including collage). Receiving will be Tuesday, April 2, from 3 to 6 pm. The prospectus and further information for interested artists can be found on the SCAN website at scanart.org.

The Artists’ Reception and Awards are planned for Saturday, April 6, from 4 to 6 pm. Awards will be presented at 5 pm. The public is invited to the reception, as well as to the exhibition.

Jurors for selection and awards are nationally known artists Alain Picard, Jim Laurino, and Sandra Cointreau. The annual Larry Newquist Award for Excellence/Best in Show prize for $600 and numerous other prizes (totaling over $2,000) will be given for outstanding work at the show reception.

‘Manet’s Florals’ Workshop

SCAN is offering a one-day workshop, “Manet’s Florals with Roberta Shea,” on Saturday, April 20.

This event will run from 10 am to 3 pm at Newtown Meeting House, 31 Main Street (at The Flagpole).

Painters of all skill levels are welcome. Students will work from live floral arrangements in all mediums, and are asked to bring their own paints and small canvas or paper (11” x 14”). Students should also plan to provide their own lunch.

Fee is $85 per person ($65 for SCAN members). Class size is limited.

Shea completed her formal degree in art education at Southern Connecticut State University, then taught art in public high schools, adult education, and after school programs. She has participated in numerous group and solo shows in both Connecticut and New York.

Her work is also found in private collections in Connecticut, New York, California, Illinois, Florida, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, and New Hampshire.

Shea has won numerous awards in painting including from Washington Arts Association, Ridgefield Guild of Artists Juried Show, and The President’s Award from the Connecticut Women Artists in 2020 and First Place in 2021.

The April workshop will include a demonstration, instructions, and time to paint.

Registration is required and available by sending a check payable to SCAN, with Roberta Shea workshop noted on the memo line, to SCAN, PO Box 41, Newtown CT 06470. Students are asked to include their name, address, phone and e-mail with their payment.

Registration is done once the fee is paid.
