David Rutledge Buyers

David Rutledge Buyers, 84, of Newtown, passed away peacefully on the morning of Saturday, March 28, at Cheshire Regional Rehabilitation Center in Cheshire, Conn.

David was born in Queens, N.Y., to Elizabeth Rutledge and David McClellan Buyers on December 20, 1935. He grew up in Queens, graduated from high school, and joined the Airforce. He later graduated from Columbia University with a Master’s Degree in accounting.

David was married twice before he met his third wife, whom he married on December 29, 1981, at Woodbury Methodist Church in Long Island, N.Y.

He worked as a Certified Public Accountant for several corporations, including Ebasco, Warnaco, and IBM before he retired in 1999. He was a lover of art, yoga, making awkward jokes at inappropriate times, and his wife’s cooking.

David is preceded in death by his father, mother, and sister, Elizabeth Joyce Gallagher. He is survived by his wife, Sandra Gail Carlson Buyers; his daughters Heather Buyers-Wynn and her husband, Matthew, and Jessica, Katrina, and his son David Carlson Buyers; several nieces and nephews: Evelyn Kollias, Grace Gallagher, Daniel Gallagher, Virginia Gallagher, Susan Boriotti, Thomas Gallagher, and Barbara Matson. He leaves behind three grandchildren: Noah and Isaac Wynn, and Maximus Cucolo; as well as seven grandnephews and three grandnieces.

The family wishes to extend our sincere thanks to the staff at Cheshire Regional Rehabilitation Center and Marbridge Retirement Center, who cared for him in his final years.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to the West Hartford Methodist Church, 1358 New Britain Avenue, West Hartford CT 06110.

A private burial is being held at Fairview Cemetery in West Hartford on Tuesday, April 1. Arrangements are by Taylor & Modeen Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at a later time, due to current restrictions on gatherings.
