The Connecticut Choral Society (CCS) will offer a special performance of what many consider one of the greatest works of sacred music ever written: Monteverdi’s Vespers 1610.

The concert is planned for Sunday, April 14, at 3 pm, at Trinity Episcopal Church, 36 Main Street.

CCS will perform together with the internationally acclaimed OrchestraNexus, Nexus Choral Artists, and renowned soloists Linda Sweetman-Waters on organ and Max Vladimiroff on harpsichord, all under the direction of Maestro Eric Dale Knapp.

A masterwork of the early Baroque period, Vespers 1610 is an extraordinary and revolutionary setting of the five psalms, hymn, and Magnificat which make up the Vespers liturgy. It is a grand scale production with multiple choirs, soloists, harpsichord, organ, and orchestra that features majestic choruses, poignant duets, and virtuosic solos.

The audience can expect a grand scale treat as well. Listeners will be seated in the center of a performance in the round, surrounded by soloists, orchestra and various vocal ensembles.

The glorious masterpiece is seldom performed live and in its entirety because it places significant demands on the abilities of both singers and instrumentalists, and the chorus must be large enough to split into soloists and ensembles or even into separate choirs.

The approaching Newtown performance is a rare opportunity for local audiences to experience a live performance of the unforgettable masterpiece that has captivated performers and audiences for over four centuries.

Led by Knapp, CCS is known for its high musical performance standards, outstanding contribution to the arts, and community outreach. It is dedicated to bringing beautiful and inspiring classical works to local audiences in western Connecticut.

Reservations are recommended as space is limited by the scope of the presentation. Tickets are $55 and available online at ctchoralsociety.com. They will be available at the door if not sold out prior to the concert.

Parking is ample and free, and the church is wheelchair accessible.
