Focus On: Tours Of Yale Art Gallery’s Permanent Collection

NEW HAVEN — A new series of talks at Yale University Art Gallery is offering visitors to the museum a fresh look at some of the works on display in YUAG’s permanent collection. Started at the beginning of the year, the weekly lectures are free – as is museum admission.

Participants should meet in the lobby of YUAG, which is at 1111 Chapel Street in New Haven.

Upcoming programs are as follows:

April 7, “Roman Copies of Greek Sculpture (and What That Really Means),” by Richard A. Grossman, a History of Art graduate student.

April 14, “Poetry and Painting in China,” by Pauline Lin, a lecturer of East Asian Languages and Literatures.

April 21, “A Masterpiece by Jacopo Pontormo: The Madonna del Libro,” by Laurence Kanter, the Lionel Goldfrank III Curator of Early European Art.

April 28, “Impressionism in France and America,” by Susan Greenberg, the Horace W. Goldsmith Assistant Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art.

May 5, “Tji’Wara: Dancing the Sun and the Earth,” by Frederick Lamp, the Frances and Benjamin Benenson Foundation Curator of African Art.

YUAG is currently undergoing a major restoration of its Louis I. Kahn building. During this time, a carefully chosen group of works from the collections of African, ancient American, Asian, early European, and modern and contemporary art is on view in the Egerton Swartwout building. The selections include both acknowledged masterpieces and works of importance in the teaching of the history of art. The works will remain on view until June 2005.
