Can the first day of the spring season get any better?

Newtown High School opened the 2005 campaign last Wednesday with the baseball team taking on Abbott Tech, the girls’ tennis team facing Brookfield, the girls’ lacrosse team hosting Immaculate and the softball team hosting Greenwich and went it was all over the Nighthawks – together – had logged four wins while out-scoring their opponents 51-1.

That is one heck of a start.

Read on –

BASEBALL

Newtown 33, Abbott Tech 0

Newtown 8, Fairfield Ludlowe 0

Wilton 15, Newtown 2

Scoring forty-one runs in two games without allowing any at all – wow, could there be anything that would stop the Newtown High School baseball team?

Yes – youth. After hammering Abbott Tech, 33-0, in the season opener last week and then following up with an impressive 8-0 win over Fairfield Ludlowe, the Nighthawks were off to the kind of start they could have only dreamed about.

But the ‘Hawks are still young and, as head coach Carl Strait lamented this week, they showed that youth in a 15-2 loss to Wilton on Monday.

Still, a 2-1 start – with the kind of offense shown by Peter Oggeri, Brennan Coakley, Nick Magoulas, Matt Nicoll and Brian Shimko and the kind of pitching effort put forth by Steve Marks – has boosted hopes that the ‘Hawks have the potential to put together their first winning season in several years.

Word was that Tech had been impressive in pre-season games, but the ‘Hawks had some words of their own when they unleashed a 37-hit attack and rolled to a 33-0 win. Shimko collected four hits while Magoulas banged out two doubles and singles to lead the offense. And Coakley, the big right-handed slugger, drove in six runs.

Two days later, the ‘Hawks traveled to Fairfield to take on a first-year Ludlowe team that had already notched its first-ever win. But Marks fired a masterful five hitter with 10 strikeouts (and threw just 71 pitches in the complete-game effort, 64 of those pitches for strikes). Oggeri was 3-for-3 with a triple, double and two RBI while Nicoll was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and two RBI.

Ryan McGrath and Seth Hull both drove in runs.

The toughest test of the young season came on Monday when the ‘Hawks traveled to Wilton and before the game was even an inning old, the locals found themselves in a deep, deep hole. Dan DeCarlo doubled twice, tripled, singled and drove in four runs as Wilton scored seven runs in the first inning and seven more in the fifth enroute to the 15-2 win.

Jeff Mawn limited the ‘Hawks to just five hits – three of those, though, for extra bases as Coakley, Mike Tibbetts and Steve Vichiola all doubled.

The ‘Hawks were in Stratford on Wednesday and on Saturday will host a doubleheader against Weston at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport. Next Wednesday, they will be home to Joel Barlow.

GIRLS TRACK

Newtown 119, Bethel 30

Newtown 136, Stratford 13

Newtown 145, Immaculate 4

Boasting a stable filled with great talent, the Newtown High School girls’ track and field team is expected by many to defend their 2004 South-West Conference championship and began that quest on Tuesday afternoon in Stratford.

The Lady Nighthawks easily rolled past Bethel (119-30), Stratford (136-13) and Immaculate (145-4) to open the campaign at 3-0.

“We are on our way,” said head coach Doug Russell, who takes over the program from departed coach Marsha Caine (like he did with the cross country team last fall – leading that squad to an SWC title).

Alex Konneker – who captured three individual titles at the SWC championships last year – has already qualified for the SWC meet in the 100-meter dash and for the CIAC Class LL meet in the 200- and 400-meter dashes.

Leah Herity has qualified for the SWC meet with her performance in the pole vault while Class LL qualifiers include Ciara Simek (lone jump), Sadie Ball (1600 and 3200 meters), Carly Curran (high jump), Quincey Blanchard (high jump) and Jess Cosgrove (discus).

Following the break next week, the ‘Hawks will host Lauralton Hall, Pomperaug and Weston on Tuesday, April 26.

BOYS TRACK

Newtown sweeps Bethel,

Immaculate and Stratford

The Newtown High School boys’ track and field team has made a habit out of busting out of the gate at the start of a new season and this season was no exception.

The Nighthawks, primed and ready for a run at the South-West Conference championship, finished first in all 11 track events and two of the seven field events and made short work of Immaculate, Stratford and Bethel on Monday afternoon in Bethel.

Liam Cawley (110 high hurdles and 300 intermediate hurdles) and newcomer Marcus Tracy (100 and 400 dash) were double winners for the ‘Hawks.

Cawley edged out Hatchett of Stratford in the 110 hurdles by three-tenths of a second and then had to edge out his own teammate, Jeff Lipnick, by a mere two-tenths of a second to take first in the 300 hurdles.

Tracy – a senior soon to be playing soccer at Wake Forest – began his track and field career by blazing his way to an 11.0 school-record finish in the 100 dash (seven-tenths of a second ahead of Scails of Bethel) and then blazing his way to a 52.4 finish in the 400 dash (nearly two seconds ahead of Scails of Bethel).

Charley Baldour (3200 meters – 10:18.0), Peter Dittmar (1600 meters – 4:39.0), Chris DeRoo (800 meters – 2:10.3), Nick Mentesana (200 dash – 23.8), Ryan Peters (javelin – 141-11/2) and Mike Cash (discus – 112-6) were individual winners.

The foursome of Jake Sullivan, Mike Nastri, Scott Nichols and Matt Cole captured the 4x800 relay by 17 seconds while the foursome of Kevin Quinn, Brian Miles, Nick Mentesana and Mike Nastri captured the 4x400 relay by five seconds.

The foursome of Ryan Davies, Mentesana, Adam Drummond and Tracy captured the 4x100 relay by almost a second over Stratford.

The Nighthawks will host Pomperaug and Weston on Monday, April 25, following the spring break.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Newtown 17, Immaculate 0

Cheshire 14, Newtown 10

Joel Barlow 8, Newtown 5

The Newtown High School girls’ lacrosse team rolled over first-year Immaculate to open the 2005 season … but paid for it with losses to archrival Cheshire last week and defending state champion Joel Barlow on Tuesday.

After the 17-0 win over Immaculate got the season off to a flying start, Cheshire – always one of the toughest opponents on the schedule – grounded the Lady Nighthawks last Thursday with a 14-10 victory.

And then Joel Barlow – the defending Division II state champion – pinned an 8-5 loss on the ‘Hawks and dropped the locals to 1-2 on the year.

Meg Regnery scored five goals in the win over Immaculate and six more in the loss to Cheshire, but was able to find the net just once against Joel Barlow. With 12 goals, three assists and 15 points so far, Regnery is the leading offensive force on the team.

But the ‘Hawks have also gotten great contributions from Karli Beitel (4-4-8), Casey Frobey (4-3-7) and Rachel Maley (4-1-5). Moira Collier has a goal and two assists while Kim Solheim, Jen Greenwood, and Libby Feltch have two goals apiece.

Brianna Berg has also notched a goal.

The ‘Hawks hosted Weston on Thursday and will host Fairfield Warde next Thursday.

GIRLS TENNIS

Newtown 6, Brookfield 1

Newtown 7, Bethel 0

With the loss of Brittany Meier from No. 1 singles and Kim Allen from No. 1 doubles, everyone has had to take a step up the ladder on the Newtown High School girls’ tennis team. But has that been a problem?

No, sir.

Lauren Nemeth, Tara Ryan and Michelle Serock were all dominating at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 singles last year and picked up last week right where they left off, leading the Lady Nighthawks to a 6-1 win over Brookfield and a 7-0 sweep of Bethel.

Nemeth – now playing at first singles – is 2-0 with wins over Jasmin Guelzenleughter of Brookfield and Tiffany Chambers. Tara Ryan won her first match at second singles while Serock won both her matches – at third singles against Brookfield and at second singles against Bethel (in the absence of Ryan).

The duo of Jill Tanner and Emily Fields recorded their first two wins at No. 1 doubles, defeating Trish Carriero and Mari Bartolomeo of Brookfield and Scarlet Gonzalez and Christina Frenzese of Bethel.

Ashley Gabor has proven how versatile she is, getting together with Sarah Salbu to win a doubles match against Brookfield and then bumping up to third singles to sweep Jessica Murphy of Bethel 6-0, 6-0.

It’s been a nice start for the ‘Hawks, who hope to return to the SWC and CIAC Class L team tournaments in May.

SOFTBALL

Newtown 5, Greenwich 0

Newtown 3, North Branford 2

Trumbull 2, Newtown 1

Lauralton Hall 7, Newtown 0

Power at the plate, clutch hitting, solid fielding, and great pitching – after three games, it appeared as if the Newtown High School softball team had all the ingredients it needed in 2005.

Until it ran into an old nemesis.

The Lady Nighthawks well remember Lauralton Hall’s visit to Newtown last year and how Kim Ovittore won the game for the Lady Crusaders with a two-out homer in the bottom of the seventh inning. Well, Ovittore was back on Monday and all the University of Notre Dame prospect did was triple in a run and fire a one-hit shutout with 13 strikeouts to lift Lauralton to a 7-0 win.

After wins over Greenwich (5-0) and North Branford (3-2), the Newtown offense – with six extra base hits and a clutch, game-winning single – was moving along just fine. But Ovittore shut that offense down, allowing only a sixth-inning triple to Megan LaFlamme and dropping the ‘Hawks to 2-2.

In the win over Greenwich, Ashley Ferris ripped a double and a triple and drove in three runs while Jenna Van Waalwijk tripled and drove in a run. Christina Wolf chipped in with a couple of RBIs, as well. Senior pitcher Lisa Morgan fired a two-hitter (taking a no-hitter into the seventh inning), striking out eight batters along the way.

In the win over North Branford, Van Waalwijk snapped a 2-2 tie with an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth inning. Emily Blewett doubled to help spark the offense. Morgan nailed down a two-hitter, striking out eight more batters to run her record to 2-0.

The ‘Hawks fell to Trumbull on Saturday despite a nifty three-hitter by Morgan, who struck out 10 batters and helped herself with a double at the plate. LaFlamme added a double, as well, but Trumbull catcher Lindsey Arrico drove in a pair of runs to lift her team to the win.

And on Monday afternoon it was all Lauralton Hall as Mary Rose Sheehy tripled, homered and drove in four runs to spark a 10-hit attack. The ‘Hawks were completely stymied until LaFlamme tripled with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning.

The ‘Hawks were at Bunnell on Wednesday and hosted Brookfield on Thursday. Next Monday they will be in Weston before returning home Wednesday for a game against Joel Barlow.

BOYS LACROSSE

New Milford 18, Newtown 10

Branford 10, Newtown 5

Things didn’t look so bad after the first period.

But after the second period …

When Grant Speer scored at the first-period horn, the Newtown High School boys’ lacrosse team had a narrow, 4-3, lead on a New Milford team that in the past may have been called … well, pesky. But the Green Wave proved themselves to be quite a bit more than that, erupting in the second period and rolling to an 18-10 win in the 2005 season opener.

Two days later, the ‘Hawks dropped to 0-2 with a 10-5 loss to Branford.

Head coach Brian Micena knew the schedule would be a challenging one, yet probably didn’t expect New Milford to be quite as challenging as it was. With Tom and Devin Dobson combining for 11 goals and Doug Kuring recording four goals and four assists, the Green Wave appear to be a legitimate threat in Division II of the South-West Conference.

Speer scored five goals to spark Newtown in the loss while Jeff Bell scored three times. Bob Pattison (a senior) and Will Mahony (a freshman) scored their first career goals while Bell notched two assists and Zach D’Agostino recorded one.

On Saturday the ‘Hawks put together a much better defensive effort against a tough Wilton team, but were unable to muster much offense. While Joe O’Keefe (three goals), Billy Alessi (2), AJ Alessi (2) and Dan Neal (2) powered the Wilton offense, Bell notched his fourth and fifth goals of the season for the ‘Hawks while Tyler Law scored twice. Mahony scored again while Scott Perry recorded an assist.

First-time goaltender Drew Harmata recorded 21 saves in the loss to Wilton, giving him 40 for the season.

The ‘Hawks will be in East Lyme on Friday and will return home next Tuesday to host Amity Regional. Then they will hit the road again, but won’t go very far as they travel to Monroe to take on Masuk.

BOYS TENNIS

Pomperaug 7, Newtown 0

Joel Barlow 7, Newtown 0

Although the Newtown High School boys’ tennis team dropped its first two matches of the 2005 season to Pomperaug and Joel Barlow – and by identical 7-0 scores – head coach Marty Margulies is nowhere near ready to push the panic button.

“Pomperaug and Barlow are two of conference’s three strongest teams, the third being Weston,” said coach Margulies, “and based on our showing against both of them, I think we remain strong playoff contenders.”

Right out of the gate, the Nighthawks had to scramble to fill some holes – which found Max Margulies playing third singles against Pomperaug and freshman Adam Feldman filling in at fourth singles because of the absence of Chris Meier.

Margulies acquitted himself well against Mike Beatty, taking his Pomperaug opponent to three sets before finally falling 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.

Elsewhere, Mario Roehrs and Shane McCarthy had a strong showing against Matt Walker and Ben Horn at No. 2 doubles while dropping a 6-1, 7-6 (7-4 decision) as Ben Wicki and Dave Wilkins lobbed very effectively and played well against Ryan Suter and Pat Regan at No. 3 doubles while dropping a 7-5, 6-2 decision.

“Considering that this was our first match of the season, that we are a young team with just one senior, and that our doubles teams were playing together for the first time I think we did very well,” said coach Margulies. “The first and second singles matches were much harder fought than the scores indicate and Max, who is usually at fourth singles, played smart, patient and consistent tennis – perhaps his best ever – in extending a talented opponent and winning our only set of the day.”

The ‘Hawks suffered much the same fate on Monday against Joel Barlow even as Meier returned to the court.

“The result was not nearly as one-sided as the overall match score might make it seem,” said coach Margulies. “All of the singles and one of the doubles matches were competitive, and at least three of the singles matches, as well as the doubles one, could go the other way when the teams meet again in league play.”

Drew Adamek played well at No. 1 singles, but fell 6-3, 6-1 to Chuck Feldman, arguably one of the best players in the South-West Conference.

“Drew not only made him work but gave him a scare,” said coach Margulies.

In his first competition of the season, Meier had a tough match against Joe Muscalino at No. 3 singles but dropped a 6-3, 7-6 (12-10) decision.

“Chris was very impressive in his first outing of the season,” said coach Margulies. “He had eight set-points in the second set and I predict he will win the next time around.”

The ‘Hawks hosted Bunnell on Wednesday and will host Bethel on Friday before traveling to Fairfield on Monday to take on Notre Dame. The locals will return home on Wednesday, April 27, to host Masuk.
