Unsafe Passing

Newtown Police report Laszlo Jeney, 71, of New Milford, operating a 2007 Mercury Milan, was traveling on Birch Hill Road at 4:11 pm March 22. Mitza Giubileo, 76, of Newtown, was parked on the road in front of a residence. Jeney attempted to pass Giubileo, striking the driver’s door of Giubileo’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Giubileo’s vehicle was towed.

Jeney was issued a written warning for unsafe passing.

Ignored Stop Sign

Newtown Police report Esther Wallace, 32, of Waterbury, operating a 2013 Subaru Impreza, was traveling westbound on Church Hill Road at 9:23 am March 27. Eric Hurtado, of Stormville, N.Y., was traveling northbound on Main Street, approaching the intersection of Church Hill Road. Wallace stopped at the stop sign and attempted to make a left turn onto Main Street. The front end of Hurtado’s vehicle struck the driver’s side of Wallace’s vehicle, causing disabling damage to both vehicles.

No injuries were reported. Both vehicles were towed.

Wallace was issued an infraction for failure to obey a stop sign.

Hit Guardrail

Newtown Police report Maureen Sabo, 76, of Shelton, operating a 2018 Chevrolet Equinox, was driving southbound on Berkshire Road at 1:43 pm March 27. Sabo crossed the northbound lane and ran off the road on the left shoulder, coming to a stop on top of a guardrail.

Sabo was transported to Griffin Hospital. The vehicle was towed.

Struck Utility Pole

Newtown Police report Arman Rojasamon, 35, of Spring Valley, N.Y., operating a 2008 Ford Escape, was traveling northbound on Hattertown Road at 2:10 am March 29. Rojasamon went off the roadway right and struck a utility pole.

No injuries were reported. Rojasamon’s vehicle was towed.

Rojasamon was issued an infraction for failure to drive in the proper lane.

Mercedes Hits Toyota

Newtown Police report Seeletso Mokgosi, 40, of Waterbury, operating a 2015 Mercedes-Benz C300, was traveling eastbound on Key Rock Road at 10:18 pm March 29. Colin Moller, 28, of Newtown, operating a 2018 Toyota Prius, was stopped at a stop sign on Key Rock Road, ahead of Mokgosi. Moller began to turn right onto Sugar Street and came to a stop. The front of Mokgosi’s vehicle struck the rear of Moller’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Mokgosi was issued a verbal warning for following too close.

Hit Rock Wall, Bench, Curbs

Newtown Police report Christopher Wallace, 23, of New Haven, operating a 2012 Mazda CX-9, was traveling eastbound on Pole Bridge Road at 1:42 pm March 30. Ella Seaver, 18, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2015 Toyota Prius, was stopped at the stop sign on Philo Curtis Road facing southbound. Seaver attempted to continue straight through the intersection, while Wallace drove through a stop sign on Pole Bridge Road, striking Seaver’s vehicle. Wallace’s vehicle continued forward on Pole Bridge Road before exiting the roadway left. It struck a curb, went over a stone wall, and struck a wooden bench. The vehicle continued across a yard and struck another curb, coming to rest southbound on Philo Curtis Road.

No injuries were reported. Wallace’s vehicle was towed.

Wallace was issued an infraction for failure to obey a stop sign.

Left Scene

Newtown Police report Yazmin Yunes, 18, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2008 Honda Accord, was backing from a parking space in the lot of 277 South Main Street at 2:32 pm March 30. A 2013 Honda Civic owned by Brenna Tierney of Bethlehem was parked and unoccupied in the same lot. Yunes backed into Tierney’s vehicle, but says she did not realize she did so. A witness saw Yunes’ vehicle move toward the plaza exit and turn right onto South Main Street.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.

Following Too Close

Newtown Police report Meemee Filan, 24, of Newtown, operating a 2008 Volvo XC70, was traveling eastbound on Church Hill Road at 8:50 am April 1. She was traveling behind a 2012 Honda Accord operated by Angela Gonzalez, 39, of Newtown. Gonzalez slowed for traffic and the front of Filan’s vehicle hit the rear of Gonzalez’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Filan was issued a written warning for following too close.

Failure To Maintain Lane

CT State Police report Mark Mockovak, 62, of Sandy Hook, was operating a 2019 Honda Civic LX westbound on I-84 at Exit 9 around 6:53 pm Monday, April 1, when he failed to maintain the lane. The Honda swerved left, traveled up the median embankment, and collided into the tree line.

Mockovak was transported by Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps to the hospital with serious injuries.

Newtown Hook & Ladder and Hawleyville Fire companies also responded to the crash.

Mockovak was found at fault for the incident and given a verbal warning for failure to maintain a lane.

Tractor Trailer Strikes Accord

Newtown Police report George Purdy, 63, of Danbury, operating a 2020 Hino 258ALP, was stopped for a traffic light in the left turn only lane of Mile Hill Road at the intersection with South Main Street at 9:47 am April 2. Christopher Reveron, 41, of Monroe, operating a 2018 Honda Accord, was stopped behind Purdy. Purdy’s vehicle rolled backward while trying to make a left turn, and the rear of Purdy’s vehicle struck the front of Reveron’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Purdy was issued a verbal warning for unsafe backing.

Failure To Grant Right Of Way

Newtown Police report Taryn Isidori, 16, of Newtown, operating a 2015 Jeep Wrangler, was exiting the commuter parking lot near exit 11 on Wasserman Way at 2:49 pm April 2. Carolyn Erikson, 56, of Brookfield, operating a 2018 Mercedes GLC, was traveling westbound on Wasserman Way. Isidori entered the westbound travel lane of Wasserman Way when it was unsafe to do so and the right rear corner of her vehicle made contact with the left front corner of Erikson’s vehicle.

Isidori left the scene but later reported the incident to the Newtown Police Department.

No injuries were reported. Erikson’s vehicle was towed.

Isidori was issued an infraction for failure to grant right of way at a private road or driveway.

Rolled Vehicle Onto Side

Newtown Police report Colton Civitello, 34, of West Haven, operating a 1995 Toyota T100, was traveling northbound on Toddy Hill Road at 5:06 pm April 2. He was traveling behind a 2008 Chevrolet Silverado operated by Cooper Fitzgerald, 18, of Milford. A non-contact vehicle backed out of a driveway, two other non-contact vehicles were able to stop, Fitzgerald was able to stop, but Civitello was not, striking the rear of Fitzgerald’s vehicle before going up an embankment and rolling his vehicle on its side.

No injuries were reported. Civitello’s vehicle was towed.

Civitello was issued a verbal warning for failure to renew registration.

Unregistered, Uninsured

Newtown Police report Eric Koenig, 44, of Southbury, operating a 2023 Jeep Wrangler, was turning left onto Swamp Road from Botsford Hill at 11:21 pm April 2. E. Garcia-Hernandez, 61, of Napanoch, N.Y., operating a 2000 Ford Ranger, was turning right onto Botsford Hill from Swamp Road. The vehicles collided as they made their turns.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Garcia-Hernandez was issued an infraction for operating an unregistered motor vehicle and failure to meet minimum insurance requirements.

Resisting Arrest Charges

Newtown Police report that on April 3, James Thorpe, 20, of Danbury, turned himself in to the Newtown Police Department on an arrest warrant on April 3. Thorpe was charged with interfering with an officer/resisting arrest, assaulting an officer, and disorderly conduct. He was released on a promise to appear with a court date of April 17 in Danbury Superior Court.

Failure To Obey Stop Sign

Newtown Police report Ortega Salinas, 21, of Danbury, operating a 2012 Chevrolet Cruz, was traveling westbound on Hattertown Road at 5:15 pm April 3. Brendan Slattery, 32, of Stamford, operating a 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee, was traveling northbound on Poverty Hollow Road and came to a complete stop at the four-way intersection of Hattertown Road and Keyrock Road. Slattery proceeded through the intersection of Hattertown Road and Keyrock Road to proceed northbound on Hattertown Road, when Salinas entered the intersection without obeying the stop sign, causing the front of his vehicle to strike the front right passenger door of Slattery’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Salinas was issued an infraction for operating a motor vehicle without minimum insurance and failure to obey a stop sign.

Following Too Close

Newtown Police report Joseph Camardella, 31, of Carmel, N.Y., operating a 2019 Chevrolet Equinox, was traveling northbound on South Main Street at 4:17 pm April 4. He was traveling behind a 2020 Mazda CX-5 Touring operated by Avery Tompkins, 16, of Newtown. Tompkins stopped in traffic and Camardella did not stop in time, rear-ending Tompkins’ vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Camardella was issued a verbal warning for following too close.

Collision At Plaza South

Newtown Police report Melena Ventresca, 16, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2024 Subaru Crosstrek, was traveling northbound on South Main Street in the area of Plaza South at 7:13 pm April 4. Quinten Jones, 27, of Bridgeport, operating a 2017 Volkswagen Passat, was traveling southbound in the right-most travel lane of South Main Street. Ventresca failed to yield right of way to oncoming traffic and attempted to enter Plaza South when it was unsafe to do so. The front of her vehicle struck the left side of Jones’ vehicle.

Ventresca reported injuries and was transported to Danbury Hospital. Both vehicles were towed from the scene.

Ventresca was issued an infraction for failure to grant right of way at an intersection.

Hit And Run Driver Sought

Newtown Police are seeking an unknown vehicle that was traveling westbound on Blackman Road at 4:22 pm April 5, that, while making a right turn onto Mt Pleasant Road, traveled through a flower bed and struck two mailboxes before leaving the scene.

Backed Into Car

Newtown Police report Gerard Lamoureux, 63, of Newtown, operating a 2018 Kia Forte, was parked in a marked parking spot in the parking lot at 266 South Main Street at 10:25 am April 6. Eduard Geelen, 74, of Monroe, was traveling in the travel lane of 266 Main Street’s lot, behind Lamoureux’s vehicle. Lamoureux backed into Geelen’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.

Cell Phone Found

Newtown Police report that at 1:30 pm April 7, a cell phone was located on Edmond Road in the area of Church Hill Road. Anyone with information or wishing to claim the phone should contact the Newtown Police Department at 203-426-5841.

Unsafe Backing

Newtown Police report Kevin Mohler, 51, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2023 Hyundai Sonata, was traveling northbound on Dayton Street at 4:18 pm April 8. Cameron White, 29, of Bridgeport, operating a Grumman LLV mail truck, was traveling behind Mohler on Dayton Street. Mohler can to a stop and attempted to move in reverse, and the rear of his vehicle collided with the front of White’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Mohler was issued a verbal warning for unsafe backing.
