Katie Burton and Aqua Drakes will present the second of three online programs in their “Newtown Together” series on April 21.

The one-hour program, “Allyship in Focus,” offered through the C.H. Booth Library, will begin at 7 pm. It will include discussion of “what ‘allyship’ is, and focus on it historically, while using modern language and modern examples,” according to a press release from the library.

The cofounders of Drakes and Burton Consulting believe people want to talk about systemic racism.

“I think people are really ready to have these conversations,” Drakes told The Newtown Bee last month. “People are really looking to have conversations, and people want the language. People want to be able to talk to each other about these things.”

Burton feels that the events of last summer, for many white people, “were a dramatic moment in terms of understanding the depth and breadth of racial injustice in our country. I think there are many people who know that familiarly and intimately, who have known that for a very long time.”

For those reasons and more, the library has launched a concerned effort to host programming related to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). Contacting Drakes and Burton was done as a direct result of these efforts.

The series opened on April 7 with “A History of Race in the United States” and will conclude with “Allyship in Action” on Wednesday, May 7.

“That’s really where we’re going to be going through scenarios and different situations, to give people the tools to come out as an ally,” Drakes explained.

Burton said last month that although there is “a huge benefit to going to all three” programs, “they’re also designed so that you can go to one and still be totally engaged,” she added.

Audience members are invited to submit questions via chat during each program. Drakes and Burton will select and respond to some of those questions in the last portion of the program.
