Nighthawk Tennis Teams Post Victories

Newtown High School’s tennis teams earned wins this week. The girls bounced back from a 4-3 loss to Pomperaug of Southbury on April 23 to defeat Stratford 6-1 on April 26. The boys blanked both Pomperaug and Stratford by 7-0 scores.

Against the Panthers, the Nighthawks got a strong performance from No. 2 singles player Jen Lorenz in a 6-2, 7-6 setback. Madison Singlak won 6-2, 6-3 at third singles. The No. 2 doubles team of Joey Libero and Ella Mortis won 6-1, 6-4, and the No. 3 tandem of Olivia Guizzo and Erin Marshall prevailed 6-0, 6-1.

Against Stratford, top singles player Julia Dolan won 6-0, 6-2, Lorenz won 6-0, 6-0 second singles, Singlak won 6-1, 6-0 at third singles, and Margaret Donovan was victorious, 6-1, 6-3 in the fourth slot. At top doubles, Amelia Hufschmeid and Kristen Reisert won 6-1, 6-0, and the No. 2 pairing of Libero and Mortis won 6-1, 6-0.

In the boys’ team’s win over Stratford, singles winners were Sam Cannizzo 6-0, 6-1, Chris Lindsay 6-0, 6-0, Josh Parsons 6-0, 6-1, and Jacob Shuman 6-0, 6-0. Doubles winners were Ben Ochs and Andrew Sposato 6-4, 7-5; Alex Kypianou and Michael Berry 6-2, 6-2; and John Boccuzzi III and Ethan Hillefeld 6-1, 6-0.
