Newtown High School’s girls’ and boys’ track and field teams had a meet at Pomperaug of Southbury on April 23 and a home meet with Masuk of Monroe on April 26.

The girls posted an 88-61 win over Pomperaug.

“Although there were some great accomplishments, the largest for me was the combined 8x100 meters run by four Newtown athletes and four Pomperaug athletes as a tribute to their fellow track athlete who was recently in a life-altering car accident,” Newtown Coach Becky Bourret said.

The Pomperaug and Newtown girls ran track together in middle school for the Nutmeg Striders club team. “This Pomperaug athlete ran the 4x100 relay with Newtown stars Ally McCarthy, Elise Barricelli, and Eva Barricelli, which placed second at Junior Olympic states, fourth at Junior Olympic Regionals at Randall’s Island in New York City, and traveled together to Junior Olympic nationals together in North Carolina,” Bourret said. “Although the girls are now competitors, the two teams came together to run a relay in which their friend could not.”

Bourret said Newtown’s 4x400 holds the state’s fastest girls’ time with a 4:09.46 from the Pomperaug meet. The team comprises Elise Barricelli, McCarthy, Hannah Snayd, and Riley Powers.

Newtown’s girls beat Masuk 93-57. Kayleigh Troy and Grace Miller both qualified in the high jump, clearing the bar at 4-foot-8.
