The First Annual Newtown Wingathlon, to benefit Dylan’s Wings of Change, will take place on the morning of Saturday, May 2. Travelers can expect delays and some road closures between the hours of 8 am and noon, in and around Fairfield Hills and southern Newtown, and are asked to watch out for runners and bicyclists.

The Wingathlon comprises two events: a competitive duathlon (5K run, 24K cycling ride, and another 5K run) and a separate Family 5K. The duathlon will start at 9 am, followed by the Family 5K at approximately 9:30, after the duathletes have transitioned to their bikes and left Fairfield Hills.

All the 5K routes use the popular Fairfield Hills route and roads affected will be around the campus and Mile Hill South and Nunnawauk. The duathlon’s cycling section departs from 1st Street within Fairfield Hills, south to Simpson Street; northwest to Keating Farms Avenue; and south to Mile Hill Road South.

From there, bicyclers will continue to Turkey Hill Road South, out to Pecks Lane, and then out to Main Street South. The route heads north on Main Street South/Route 25, before turning onto Huntingtown Road, and continuing out to Maltbie, Castle Meadow, and then Hattertown Road, turning onto Eden Hill and Hi Barlow. From Hi Barlow, riders will return to Hattertown Road and retrace the route back to Fairfield hills.

The section of South Main Street affected by Saturday’s event will be patrolled by the Newtown Police department and could include temporary road closures. Drivers are asked to be particularly vigilant on all these roads. The route can be found linked on the event website.

The route for the Family 5K will include trails within the campus, as well as 1st Street and Keating Farms Avenue. Off campus roads that are covered by the runners include Mile Hill Road South and Nunnawauk Road.
