Tennis Teams Take On Barlow And Immaculate

Newtown High School's tennis teams faced Joel Barlow of Redding on April 22 and Immaculate of Danbury on April 27.

The boys beat Barlow 6-1. In singles action, No 2 A.J. Singh won 6-3, 6-0; No 3 Aarev Shetty won 6-1, 6-1; and No 4 Brody Paulsen won 6-1, 6-2. In doubles play, the top tandem of Ryan Hislop and Steven Singlak came out on top 7-5, 6-0; No 2 Gavin Rankin and Noah Breuing won 6-3, 6-1; and No 3 Cam Linnetz and Joe Mele won 6-1, 6-3. Against Immaculate, a 7-0 Newtown victory, Singh, Shetty, Paulsen (all by 6-0, 6-1 scores), and Breuing (3-6, 6-2, 6-0) all won singles matches. Doubles winners were Cannizzo and Singlak (6-1, 6-3); Linnetz and Dan Tzakas (6-0, 6-2); and Gavin Rankin and Sean Conlin (6-1, 6-4).

On the girls' courts, NHS fell 6-1 to Barlow and 4-3 to Immaculate. The Newtown and Barlow coaches opted to play eight-game pro sets due to damp and chilly conditions. Newtown's lone winner was top singles player Emily Anderson, who prevailed 8-2. Against Immaculate the NHS winners were Anderson (6-3, 6-4), No 2 Charlotte Grasso (6-2, 6-3), and No 4 Maria Souza (7-5, 5-7, 10-8 in a match tiebreaker since the overall team outcome was determined).
