Heading into its final three matches of the regular season, Newtown High School's girls' tennis team has a record of 8-4.Boys Beat Bunnell

Two of those setbacks came at the hands of two-time South-West Conference champion Weston (by scores of 7-0 and 6-1), and another came to two-time SWC runner-up Joel Barlow of Redding (a 4-3 nail-biter in which the Nighthawks were shorthanded).

Between Weston, Barlow, and Newtown, the three teams have accounted for each champ and runner-up finisher for the last ten years, the Nighthawks last getting in on the finalist fun in 2013 when the Nighthawks bested Barlow.

Newtown Coach Maureen Maher is optimistic her team can get through the SWC tourney semifinals and, potentially/likely, have another crack at Weston.

"We can't wait to play Barlow again," said Maher, whose team fell to the Falcons in Redding on a chilly mid-April afternoon, while playing shorthanded.

With a couple of starters expected to be back in the lineup, the Nighthawks may be in position to come out on top against the Falcons when Barlow visits NHS in the regular-season finale, on Tuesday, May 8, beginning at 3:45 pm.

"This team is playing well," said Maher, crediting her team for overcoming schedule changes - postponements to practices and matches resulting from snow and rain - throughout the beginning of the campaign. "It's just been very hard to get going with the weather."

The Hawks will also try to avenge a May 2 loss to Pomperaug of Southbury, a 5-2 setback, when the teams close out the regular season on May 10.

In a 6-1 defeat to visiting Weston, on April 26, Newtown's No. 2 doubles team of Hayley Lambert and Julia Klein overcame a first-set loss to win 5-7, 7-6, 10-6.

Newtown has won all of its matches in fairly to very convincing fashion, defeating New Fairfield 5-2 and every other opponent by either 6-1 or 7-0 scores, with individuals and doubles tandems also experiencing dominance within these matches.

This includes a 7-0 won over host Bunnell of Stratford on May 1. Top singles player Marie Ann Tomaj rolled 6-0, 6-0. Amanda Berry cruised 6-1, 6-0 at the second singles spot. Megan Cooney (6-0, 6-3) and Julia Klein (6-1, 6-2) also won in singles play.

The top doubles team of Julia Anderson and Amanda Conron won 6-0, 6-0. Lambert and Sophie Wolfman teamed for a 6-1, 6-3 victory at second doubles. May Celentano and Lea Sundberg won 6-4, 6-2.

Newtown High School's boys' tennis team defeated visiting Bunnell of Stratford 7-0 on April 30. The teams played eight game pro sets.

At top singles, Constantine Vogiatzis won 8-0; No. 2 player Matt Weisgerber won 8-3; at No. 3 singles, Julian Totir won 8-1; and at fourth singles, Jacob Shuman prevailed 8-3.

In doubles play, the top team of Stephen Dooley and Sachin Mansukhani won 8-0. The No. 2 tandem of John Boccuzzi and Rushil Jefry also won 8-0. The No. 3 duo of Max Cruwys-Hayes and Phillip Mack won 8-1.

All of the Nighthawks who competed in the Bunnell match, with exception of senior Vogiatzis, are freshmen and sophomores.
