Newtown High School’s boys’ lacrosse team carried a five-game winning streak, and an 8-2 overall record, into a scheduled May 7 visit to New Fairfield, at 4 pm. The winning ways have included a trio of nail-biting one-goal contests, including two this past week.

Matt Meyers played a role in each goal the Nighthawks scored against visiting New Milford, on April 30. And it was just enough. Meyers registered four goals and assisted on four others in an 8-7 win over Newtown’s South-West Conference rivals.

Newtown led 6-2 and halftime before holding off their South-West Conference rivals. Ryan Sullivan, Logan Walsh, Deegan Beauchemin, and David MacKinnon also scored in the victory. Jared Pearson notched three assists, and faceoff specialist Mark Urso — who won 12 of 19 draws — scooped a team-high nine ground balls.

“I was just trying to do what I could to help the team out,” Meyers said of his performance against New Milford.

In a nonconference clash with Guilford, on May 2, host Newtown prevailed 9-8. Meyers and Pearson both scored twice, and Bubba Condon, Sullivan, Walsh, Beauchemin, and MacKinnon all scored. MacKinnon led the Hawks with a trio of assists.

Urso had 12 of his team’s 37 ground ball scoops, and was dominant in the faceoff circle, winning 18 of 21 draws.

In a return to SWC action, the Nighthawks earned a 12-5 win at Masuk of Monroe on May 5. Meyers and Beauchemin both had three goals, and Pearson added two. Pearson had three assists, and Walsh added a pair of helpers. Joey Santella scooped a team-best seven ground balls, and Gordon Walsh, CJ Dunn, and MacKinnon all had three.

Newtown Coach Glenn Adams is pleased that his team’s been winning, but still sees room for improvement. He noted that the Hawks could have done better with clock management and won each of the most recent one-goal contests by larger margins.

“A win’s a win. At this point, we just want to keep getting better,” said Adams, noting that the competition only stands to get tougher come playoff time. “We want to learn as much as we can from the regular season to prepare for the postseason.”

“We know what we have to do and we’re working on it, trying to get better every day,” Meyers said.

After the game with New Fairfield, always a formidable conference opponent, the Hawks will host Glastonbury on Saturday, May 9, in a nonconference battle at Blue & Gold Stadium, beginning at 7 pm. They have just four games after the Glastonbury tilt before the conference tourney begins.
