Newtown High School Sluggers Fall To Bulldogs And Wave, Beat Rebels

Newtown High School’s baseball team shook off a 7-3 loss to host Bunnell of Stratford on May 2 with a 9-5 victory at New Fairfield on May 6. The Nighthawks fell 2-0 to the New Milford Green Wave on May 7 and carried a 5-8 overall record (4-4 in South-West Conference action) into the second week of May.

The Nighthawks broke a 5-5 fifth inning tie with the Rebels by plating four runs in the frame to earn their fifth win in their last seven games.

Jaret DeVellis had two hits and two runs batted in; Charlie Huegi had three hits, an RBI, and two runs scored; Greg Hennessey had three hits and an RBI; and Garrison Buzzanca, Austin Raftery, Alex Lapinski, and Virgil Procaccini all knocked in runs.

DeVellis had the only extra base hit, a double, as part of Newtown’s 14-hit attack. Rowley pitched three-plus innings and allowed only one hit.

In the loss to Bunnell, DeVellis had two hits and two RBI, and Procaccini added a hit and a run batted in. Hennessey had two of Newtown’s six hits.
