The Al-Hedaya Islamic Center in Newtown is working to make a difference to people affected by the pandemic within the community and across the region.

The community at Hedaya began a food drive where baskets with fresh food, meat, and other groceries that could support a family for a week were distributed to over 50 households, along with some monetary relief and gift cards to those impacted by unemployment. Food boxes and masks were also delivered to healthcare workers and cleaning crews at nursing homes in the region.

The Center is encouraging the donations of weekly Ramadan Relief Box of Groceries to families struggling in the community during this month of Ramadan, as well as donations to support local food pantries.

Located at the Al-Hedaya Islamic Center, 115 Mt Pleasant Road, are boxes for either donation. Label donations for Box 1: Ramadan Relief Box; for Box 2, label donations “Food Pantry.”

Donations can be dropped off Mondays between 1 and 3 pm, or Fridays, between 2 and 3:30 pm. Please wear face masks and practice social distancing when dropping off donations. Or text Sister Eman at 203-300-9326.

Food pantry donations of tuna, beans, pasta, rice, soaps, canned fruits and vegetables, peanut butter, cereal, deodorant, diapers/wipes, toothpaste, and toothbrushes are especially needed.
