MAYNARD STEINER TALK WILL BE JUNE 5 AT CAPE COD GLASS CLUB MEETING

avv/lsb set 5/14 #699578

BARNSTABLE, MASS. — The Cape Cod Glass Club ends a successful seventh season with a luncheon meeting Tuesday, June 5, at noon. It will be held at the Barnstable Restaurant and Tavern.

Guest speaker Maynard E. “Larry” Steiner will present a slide program, “The Brooklyn Flint Glass Company, also known as the South Ferry Glass Works.” Under John L. Gilliland, glassmaking commenced there in 1823 and ceased in 1868 when equipment and tools were removed to Corning, N.Y., to found the Corning Flint Glass Works. It continues today as the Corning Glass Works.

Steiner’s presentation will feature glassware attributed to the Brooklyn Flint Glass Company, glassware exhibited at London’s Great Exhibition in 1851 and a vicarious 1863 tour of the glass factory. Historical highlights will be noted and assessed together with an overview of the factory’s role in the glass tableware industry of New York City in the mid-1850s.

Steiner is a collector of early American blown molded and pressed flint glass and a researcher of Nineteenth Century glassmaking in New York City. His publication credits in The Acorn and Glass Club Bulletin include three articles on the Brooklyn Flint Glass Company and an article on 1856 glassware salvaged from the steamboat Arabia.

He is the president of the National American Glass Club and a past president of the Westchester Glass Club. A graduate of Syracuse University and retired vice president of finance, New York Philharmonic, he lives with his wife Marion in Oradell, N.J.

The Cape Cod Glass Club is dedicated to the study and appreciation of glass regardless of the type or period, with emphasis on American glass. To that end the parent organization, The National American Glass Club, holds an annual seminar and publishes a scholarly journal that members receive three times yearly.

The Cape Cod chapter meets monthly from October to December and from March to June. Activities include formal lectures, informal study sessions, and visits to museums and working glassmakers. The first meeting of the 2007–08 season will be held on October 2. The club welcomes new members.
