Girls' Lacrosse Beats St Joseph And Weston

Newtown High School's girls' lacrosse team beat host St Joseph of Trumbull 17-7 on May 6. The Nighthawks lost 18-8 at Conard of West Hartford on May 9, and topped visiting Weston 16-5 on Senior Night, May 12.

In the win over St Joseph, Elise Ansman was critical on the draw, which resulted in Natalie McLean getting 15 draw controls. Nighthawk scorers were Natalie McLean, Nicki Kaplan, Blake Heim-Sherwood, Sara Ruddy, and Gabby O'Sullivan. Natalie McLean, Heim-Sherwood, Ruddy, Olivia Verdi, and Peyton Merrifield all recorded assists. NHS got a great defense effort by Merrifield, Sadie Singlak, Ansman, Delia Stango, Madi Weston, Audrey McLean, and Kayla Locke. Goaltender Emily Sachs anchored defense with 11 saves.

Against Conard, Sachs made another 11 saves. The defense was held down by Audrey McLean, Locke, and Stango. Goals were scored by Stango, Natalie McLean, Kaplan, Heim-Sherwood, Ruddy, and Verdi.

When Weston visited, seniors Natalie McLean, Locke, Kaplan, Annie Kane, and Jiavanna Ruzza-Yanni were celebrated. Natalie McLean, Kaplan, Heim-Sherwood, Ruddy, O'Sullivan, and Merrifield had the goals. Assists were recorded by Natalie McLean, Heim-Sherwood, Kaplan, and Merrifield. Natalie McLean, Ansman, and Heim-Sherwood controlled the draw circle. Sachs made a dozen saves behind strong defensive play from Locke, Audrey McLean, Weston, and Stewart.
