American Legion Post 202 will again honor fallen comrades with “Taps Along Main Street” ahead of a ceremony of remembrance at The Liberty & Peace Memorial on Saturday, May 27.

Newtown Woman’s Club will open the weekend by placing American flags around the monument, located on Main Street at Hanover and Schoolhouse Hill roads.

Luminaria will be set out on Saturday, and lit Saturday, Sunday and Monday evenings, May 27-29.

The public is invited to purchase luminaria. The names of deceased veterans or personal messages can be printed on each bag.

Cost for each luminaria is $5, payable by cash, check or Venmo. To purchase or for additional information contact Post Commander Donna A. Monteleone at American LegionNewtown@gmail.com or 203-577-9568.

The public will have multiple opportunities this weekend to purchase luminaria. Volunteers will be at Gino’s Pizza Parlor, 102 Church Hill Road, and Capri’s Pizza, 182 Old Hawleyville Road (Route 6) in Bethel, from 5 to 7:30 pm Friday, May 19.

They will also be out on Saturday, May 20, from 9 am until noon, at Newtown Hardware (61 Church Hill Road) and Newtown Community Center (8 Simpson Street); and Sunday, May 21, also 9 am-noon, at Bagel Delight (30 Church Hill Road) and the community center.

“All funds raised go to support student scholarships, veterans in need, etc,” Monteleone said.

The ceremony of remembrance on Saturday will begin at 5 pm.

The American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary, and Sons of the American Legion will participate. First Selectman Dan Rosenthal will also be present to reflect upon the day and our town.

Newtown High School Tri-M Club will be performing. Vocalists and members of the Newtown High School band will render the national anthem along with other patriotic music.

Newtown Boy Scouts and other local organizations will be present as well.

Limited on-street parking is available along Main Street. Plenty of additional parking is also available at Edmond Town Hall, 45 Main Street. A crosswalk directly in front of the former municipal building provides safe passage across the road, connecting to a sidewalk for the brief walk to the monument.
