A Glowing Report From A Newtown Neighborhood

What has one Newtown neighborhood positively glowing? Glow sticks.

The same neighborhood that hosted a social distance dance party in April collaborated to light up the night on May 16 by taping glow sticks to their clothes then dancing while maintaining social distance.

Dance party organizer Debbie DeBlasi said on May 26 that she came up with the idea after seeing someone post a similar idea on Facebook. She sent that idea to her neighbors and remembers telling them, “We could so do this.”

Her neighbors responded positively, so DeBlasi ordered 400 glow sticks. She then waited for the weather to be perfect and the moon “to be right.” Finally, on May 16, it looked like a good day. So she dropped glow sticks off near mail boxes for her neighbors to attach to their own clothes.

That night, families gathered together and the neighborhood danced to “U Can't Touch This.” Another neighbor played the song loud enough for all to hear. And, while it can be hard to tell from the photos and video from the night, DeBlasi said everyone maintained six-feet between the family groups.

“The kids and the adults had a ball,” DeBlasi said. Later she added, “When you were out there it was like so crystal clear and just so much fun... This is what I love about our neighborhood.”

Even neighbors who moved in recently “jumped in” on the fun.

Now, DeBlasi said the neighborhood is thinking about what it can do next.

The neighborhood welcomes The Newtown Bee readers to enjoy video from the event below:
