Girl Scout Rebecca Filiato has spent the last few months creating whimsical fairy houses and inviting the community to participate in making their own for her Gold Award project.

Roughly 90 people made fairy houses, and while some chose to keep theirs, others submitted them to be put on displayed at Cherry Grove Farm Preserve, a property owned by the Newtown Forest Association.

On May 23, Rebecca and her family were stationed at the entrance of the preserve, on Palestine Road, to inform visitors that if they followed the signs along the trail, they would be treated to a fairy village tucked away among the trees.

The fairy houses were created with a variety of natural materials including pinecones, seashells, leaves, and grasses, as well as some pops of color with stickers, pipe cleaners, and artificial flowers.

Rebecca’s goal for the Gold Award project has been to encourage children to be creative and enjoy being out in nature.

She told The Newtown Bee that she is “so grateful” to the Newtown Forest Association for letting her set up the installation at Cherry Grove Farm Preserve.

Those who would like to view the fairy houses may still do so at their convenience. The signs have been taken down, but follow the trail leading from the parking lot and take a left upon entering the wooded area to find the fairy houses on the right-hand side.
