The South-West Conference girls’ and boys’ tennis tournaments were held in late May and culminated with championships on May 24.

Newtown High School’s doubles tandem of John Boccuzzi III and Ethan Hillefeld reached the championship round and fell to Weston, earning silver medals.

Andrew Sposato and Alex Kyprianou reached the quarterfinals, and Ben Ochs and Orion Bracksieck lost in the quarterfinals.

In singles play, Josh Parsons and Jacob Shuman both advanced to the quarterfinals before falling. Sam Cannizzo and Chris Lindsay fell in the first round. Lindsay held a lead over the second seed, from Weston, before his racket handle broke.

The Nighthawk boys were SWC Colonial Division champs, ranked ninth in Class LL this year and will compete in the state tournament.

The girls also finished first in the Colonial Division. Top singles player Julia Dolan and No. 2 singles player Jen Lorenz both reached the SWC semis, with Lorenz falling in a hard-fought match against Pomperaug, 4-6, 5-7.

The No. 2 doubles tandem of sophomore Joey Libero and freshman Ella Morits scored impressively well with a 4-6, 6-7 loss against rival Joel Barlow of Redding in the semis, Coach Nancy Anderson said No. 3 doubles players Olivia Guizzo and Erin Marshall were competitive in a 2-6, 3-6 loss to Barlow.

Anderson said No. 3 singles player Madison Singlak had a strong season and expects her to continue to develop on the court. Anderson is also looking forward to a potential doubles team of Amelia Hufschmeid and Kristen Reisert next season.

“We have grown as a team in the short season and met all of my expectations with our ending results. I am impressed more so with the team camaraderie that was developed and the sportsmanship demonstrated by our Nighthawks as they grew together over the season,” Anderson said. “I am proud of our girls for their commitment to their own development, especially losing a season, with the majority of the players freshman and sophomores. I am hopeful for a stronger, more threatening team next year.”

John Boccuzzi III and Ethan Hillefeld flank Coach Haby Farah after earning silver medals in the conference tourney.
