The United States Achievement Academy announced recently that Newtown Middle School eighth grader Tommy Gleason, son of Pam and Bob Gleason, has been named an All-American Scholar. The United States Achievement Academy established the All-American Scholar Award program to offer recognition to superior students who excel academically. The All-American Scholars must earn a 3.3 or higher grade point average. Only scholars selected by a school instructor, counselor, or other qualified sponsor are accepted. Tommy was nominated by Thomas J. DeBenedetto. Tommy will be in the All-American Scholar Yearbook, which is published nationally, this year.

 Two local students graduated from Marist College, Poughkeepsie, N.Y., the weekend of May 21. Bruce A. Granville of Sandy Hook received a master of science degree in information systems/management specialization, and Ryan C. Martin received a bachelor of science degree in business administration/emphasis: human resources.

Donna Edwards graduated with a Masters Of Science Degree In Education from Wilkes University, Wilkes-Barre, Penn., on Saturday, May 22.

Christine D’Alessandro was named to the dean’s list in the University of Notre Dame’s First Year of Studies for outstanding scholarship during the spring 2010 semester. Students who achieve dean’s honors at Notre Dame, in Indiana, represent the top 30 percent of students in their college.

Scott Shpunt graduated magna cum laude from Northeastern University, Boston, with a bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering. He was also inducted into the Tau Beta Pi Honor Society.

In Potsdam, N.Y., Stephen P. Graham of Sandy Hook made the Dean’s List at Clakson University. Dean’s List students at the university must achieve a minimum 3.25 GPA and also carry at least 14 credit hours.

Abigail L. Atkinson, daughter of Mary and Glenn Atkinson, graduated cum laude with a bachelor of arts in economics and Alexander C. Meisel, son of Paul Meisel and Cheryl Clark, graduated with a bachelor of arts in economics from Bucknell University, Lewisburg, Penn., on May 23.

Daniel Delia and Don Cervone graduated from Sacred Heart University in Fairfield during a weekend commencement ceremony between May 15 and 16.

Also at Sacred Heart University, Nicholas Garofalo and Sara Pollock of Sandy Hook were named to the Dean’s List for the spring semester. To receive this honor, a student must achieve a 3.6 grade average, based on a 4.0 scale at the university.
