Memorial Day Kick-Off

The Nitros went 6-1 overall in extended play during the Newtown Soccer Club’s Memorial Day Kick-Off tournament.  They played in their designated bracket, and also in another bracket as a last minute substitute for another Connecticut team which had to cancel.

In spite of playing in twice as many games as their competitors, the Nitros netted 24 goals and allowed only 4.  However, fatigue ultimately took over and they lost the final bracket game 2-0, denying them the chance to play for the championship. The team played outstanding soccer and is now well conditioned to compete in their season closeout tournament in Middlebury, VT next weekend.

NITROS 2, TRUMBULL UNITED 1: In a close win, Maggie DeMarco and Nicole Sieber netted one goal apiece, and assisted eachother as well.  Lindsay Weber provided solid offensive support while Sarah Gutbrod handled the goalkeeping duties.

NITROS 5, RIDGEFIELD 0: The Nitros recorded a shutout with Sarah Gutbrod and Kyla Miles sharing time in goal, and Darcy Fiscella sparking the defense. Jennifer Greenwood, Kyla Miles, Maggie DeMarco (2) and Nicole Sieber handled scoring.  Rachael Perretta supported the attack with one assist.

NITROS 7, NEW MILFORD 0: The scoring gap widened as the Nitros turned in another shut-out.  Kristene Salbu played strong on the defensive end while Rose Jackman provided mid-field support.  Maggie DeMarco netted a hat-trick, Kyla Miles added two more while Rachel Eastman and Rachael Perretta added one apiece.  Nicole Sieber and Perretta contributed assists.

SOUNDVIEW (Greenwich) 2, NITROS 0: In the eleventh hour the Nitros suffered a heart breaking loss despite outstanding goal-keeping by Sarah Gutbrod. The hard working offensive attack did all but make it to the net while the defensive effort fell short just once (the second goal came off a PK). Sara Peters fought hard in the physical struggle.

NITROS 4, WESTON 1: Rachel Eastman mustered up lots of energy in this seventh game of the weekend and helped spark the offense.  Kyla Miles turned in a hat-trick with assists from Nicole Sieber and Lindsay Weber while Maggie DeMarco added one more (off a PK).

NAVIGATORS 2, NEW MILFORD 0: In the past four games, the Navigator goalkeepers have allowed just one goal and in a 2-0 win over New Milford, Ashley Braun threw another first-half shutout. But the story of the game was the second-half keeping of Alana Bilangi. Bilangi made four terrific, point-blank saves in her first action all season. That allowed the ‘Gators to win on goals from Rachel Maley and Katie Kirranne. Caroline Kraich and Claire Ober worked hard at midfield while Christie Attansio and Jaclyn Petrasanta played rock solid defense. Julie Landin – the so-called free safety – continued to be in the right place at the right time.

GIRLS CD DIVISION

STARS 7, CHEETAHS 6: Both teams set scoring records for the season – with a final point tally more reminiscent of football than soccer – as the Stars prevailed in a hotly contested Saturday morning shootout.  The Cheetahs sprang to life first, with Stefanie Prorock pumping a goal home before Catlin (Cat) Williams struck back with a key assist from Elizabeth (Biz) Bowen (who herself was to turn a hat trick on the day) as the Stars shook off 8th grade dance sleep deprivation to unleash a blistering attack.  Jessica Paynter and Biz Bowen both scored while Cat Williams added another . . . but the more rested and numerous Cheetahs simply refused to be put away.  Ann-Marie Schriever fed Prorock a telling assist as she notched her second goal of the day, leaving halftime standings at 4-2 in favor of the now fatigue-racked Stars.  The Cheetahs capitalized on that weakness promptly after intermission, and although the Stars kept scoring – Paynter added another to her count while Biz Bowen fired home two – rolled out a weapon any team would find almost impossible to stop.  With each missing Star shot that wasn’t blocked by the gutsy, thick-skinned play of Jen Badillo, Jenna Zigman boomed a goal kick over the greedily circling Star offense (and occasionally defense as well) to the straight shooting feet of none other than Prorock.  Star goalie Kate Mayer blunted much of the resulting barrage, but four shots nevertheless struck home, leaving Stefanie with an amazing double hat trick (six goals) while the Stars held grimly on for sweet victory . . . and even sweeter ice cream.

STRIKERS 4, GATORADES 1: Courtney Brunton and Alicia Kelp led the Strikers’ offense in the win. Diana Bowen had a strong defensive game. For the Gatorades, Collette Nagileri scored a goal as Kristen Landolfi and Wendy Borst played well on defense.

DYNAMITES 4, NIGHTMARES 2: Diana Rawson scored just seven minutes into the game for the Nightmares, but the scored was tied at the half thanks to a goal from the Dynamites’ Chrissy Glander. Mandy Black and Aileen Kerns boosted the Dynamites’ lead to 3-1 in the second half, but the Nightmares fought back with a goal from Laura Reid. In the final minute of the game, the Dynamites’ Sally Tabler scored the final goal. Midfielder Liz O’Connell and fullback Sophie Cerreta led the Dynamites while fullback Ellen Reid and goaltender Amy Kelly paced the Nightmares.
