Babe Ruth Softball Tryouts

There will be tryouts for the Newtown Babe Ruth softball U14 travel team on Saturday, June 7, from 5 to 7 pm, at the Newtown Middle School field. Tryouts are mandatory for all travel players. Cost is $175 and includes full uniform, league games and tournaments. Season begins on June 20 and goes through August 10. Call Rich Van Waalwijk, director of travel, at 426-1673 for further information. Rain date is Sunday, June 8, from 5 to 7 pm.

 

Newtown Football/Pop Warner Camp

There will be a Newtown Football/Pop Warner camp Monday, July 21, through Friday, July 25, 9 am to 12 noon each day, at Hawley School. Contact Matt Wheeler at 270-1324 to sign up.

 

Cheerleading Coordinator Sought

The Newtown Pop Warner Football/Cheerleading program is seeking a new cheerleading coordinator for the 2003 season. If interested, please call Newtown Pop Warner president Dave Benore at 426-3488.

Football Car Wash

A car wash benefiting the Newtown High School football program will be held Saturday, June 7, from 9 am to 2 pm, at the VFW Hall off South Main Street.

WCSU Basketball Camp

The women’s basketball program at Western Connecticut State University will be sponsoring its 2003 Girls’ Basketball Hoop Camp July 28 through August 1, 9 am to 3:30 pm each day. Namath Football Camp

Learn to Row

The New Haven Rowing Club will hold classes for men and women starting Saturday, June 14, and Monday, June 16. There will 12 on the water sessions (90 minutes each) for four weeks at the Boathouse on the Housatonic River. Cost is $160. Golf For MADD

MADD will hold a “Drive One Home For Madd” on Saturday, June 14, 10 am to 5 pm, at Golf Quest on 1 Sand Cut Road in Brookfield. There will be family fun activities and golf and baseball contests. There will be longest drive, iron accuracy, putting, chipping and miniature golf contests as well as home run and fastest pitch contests. Prizes will be awarded. There will also be food, a kids’ fun booth, and free safety information. City Center Grand Prix

The City Center Grand Prix – a race for miniature cars attained speeds of 25 miles an hour – will be held on June 8 on the streets of Danbury. The Grand Prix will be the focal point of a daylong festival on the Danbury green featuring food, kids games, racecar displays, and live music. WRKI-FM (I-95) will present the festival, which will benefit the American Red Cross of Western Connecticut.

Hat City Cyclefest

The 11th annual Hat City Cyclefest will be held Sunday, June 8, rain or shine, starting at Rogers Park Middle School in Danbury. Register there from 7 to 11 am. There will be routes ranging from five to 103 miles, all supported by SAG wagons. This is not a race. There will be rest stops with food and water. Helmets are required for all riders.
