Saturday Fundraiser At NHS––

Let The Good Times Roll At Skate And Music Festival

By Dottie Evans

The Newtown Youth Services (NYS) and the Newtown Skate Park Association (NSPA) will put on a townwide tag sale and fundraiser Saturday, June 7, from 8 am to 8 pm, at Newtown High School.

The event will also feature a professional skateboarding demonstration and tournament, a mini carnival for children, food, concessions, and a Battle of the Bands music festival.

Co-sponsors of the skateboard competition are Rampage, a manufacturer of skateboard equipment located in Stratford, and Ski Market Underground, a Danbury-based retail business located in the Blockbuster shopping plaza off Route 6.

The Battle of the Bands is being sponsored by the East Coast Music Mall in Danbury.

“We’re very excited about this event. We want to keep the positive energy and the momentum going,” said NSPA parent volunteer Ken Gottschalck on Tuesday.

Mr Gottschalck and NYS Outreach Coordinator Matt Rosen are planning to put on a series of fundraisers designed to generate support for equipment and construction of a temporary skate park at Fairfield Hills.

Mr Rosen said he hoped Saturday’s event would “be the first of many.”

The skate park is slated for construction later in the summer on an old tennis court at Fairfield Hills, and both the NYS and NSPA groups hope that eventually there will be enough money to build a permanent skate park close by.

Fundraiser organizers are accepting donations from anyone in the community for the tag sale. Items should be dropped off at the high school between 3 pm and 8 pm on Friday.

Registration for the skateboard competition begins at 10 am Saturday, and the event starts at noon. The Tag Sale, Skate And Music Festival will be held rain or shine and will have activities for the entire family.
