Tax Structure Costs Newtown Jobs

To the Editor:

The recent announcement of the Kendro Laboratory move to North Carolina should come as no surprise. One need look no further than the recent budget, which passed by a narrow margin.

The Bee article mentions that Kendro was the fourth major manufacturing company to leave in the past three years.

The recently passed “austere” budget includes a 7.6 percent education increase. In these difficult economic times how can this increase be justified? Where will homeowners get extra money to pay the increased tax burden? How many taxpayers received a 7.6 percent increase in their income this past year?

The loss of manufacturing in Newtown, with corresponding loss of tax revenue, is the direct result of smart business decisions, moving plants and operating them where the tax structure is reasonable. Until Newtown comes to grips with its out-of-control budget we can expect the loss of businesses will continue.
