Golf Teams And Tennis Players Participate In States

Newtown High School’s golf teams competed in state championships this week. The boys’ squad, with a score of 327, tied for 12 in the Division I match, won by Ridgefield (313), at the par 72 Timberlin Golf Club in Berlin, on June 8.

Josh Houle shot an 80, Colin Patrick had an 81, Graham Hubbert had an 82, Jacob Burden had an 84, and Ryan Patrick shot a 94.

The girls’ championship took place at the par 74 Orange Hills Country Club, on June 9, and the Nighthawks placed fifth, shooting a 384. Berlin won the match with a 346. Sarah Houle led Newtown with an 85, Molly Wilson shot a 96, Brenna Kelly had a 98, Liz Weisgerber had a 105, and Halle Wilson shot a 110.

Tennis Open

In the State Open girls’ tennis tournament, held at Yale University in New Haven this week, Lauren Beier defeated Northwest Catholic’s Angela Miguel in a walkover in the opening round, then lost 8-2 to Ellington’s Kristine Gouin in the second round. Also in singles play, Aimee Alexander lost to Northwest Catholic’s Anna Case in a walkover in the opening round. In doubles action, Lindsay O’Donnell and Emily McCoy defeated Seymour’s Sarah Possenti and Rachel Korponay 8-1 in the opening round, then fell 8-0 to Staples of Westport’s Avery Wallace and Tess Rubin in the first round.
